Thanks Tom. Under the Owners tab, there isn't an edit button.

Update: I just continued to step 6 and this message popped up: Registry editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys.

    Is this okay?

    Hi Eric,

Sorry for the confusion, I should have removed that from the instructions. Thank you for asking, but that's nothing to worry about, continue as before.

I also forgot to mention that I would like you to run the System Update Readiness Tool and post the log when you have completed the registry modifications:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Okay, I followed through and it wouldn't let me rename the file: Microsoft-Windows-IE-Troublesðooters-Package~31bf3856ad364e35ÿamd64~en-US~6.1.7600.16385

    Is that okay?
I will run the SURT now and post the details so though.

    Hi Eric,

Thanks for letting me know about the key not renaming. Did it say the key already existed by any chance?

    Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

    1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
    2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
    3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

      REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing" /s > %SYSTEMDRIVE%\tom982.txt

    4. This will create a text file called tom982.txt in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.txt). Please attach this to your next post.

    Hi Eric,

    Let's try another one:

Open regedit again and rename this key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-IE-Troublesdooters-Package~31bf3856ad364e35˜amd64~en-US~6.1.7600.16385

    To:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-IE-Troubleshooters-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.1.7600.16385

Just to clarify, Values are located in the right pane in regedit. Navigate to this key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.0

    Rename this value:

    Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~8.0.7600.163,5

    To:

    Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~8.0.7600.16385

Then repeat my instructions here please: Windows Update Error Code 490 & 80070490

The same error message popped up stating that it can't be renamed. Could we just delete this key? There is no contents in it.

Anyway, I uploaded the updated file: http://sandblasterinfo.com/tom982.txt

I tried renaming the values as you stated but it couldn't rename because the value already exists.

    Hi Eric,

Yes, in that case please delete both. Then run the SURT and post the log please:
