Thanks, Tom & Noel.
I haven't tried installing IE 10 yet. Should I try it now?
If this process fixed the problem - many thanks! Can either of you tell me what was the actual cause? Was it file corruption?

The CheckSUR is clear
As to cause....
file corruption? - yes.
The question is what was the cause of the file corruption?
All the affected files are from SP1 - either from the original disk or the SP install - so it's possible that the problem has been present from that time, if the install media weren't perfect, or a RAM problem existed at the time.
It's certainly worth attempting IE10 now - first do another manual Check for Updates to make sure that nothing else is detected. | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K52F OS Win 7 x64 Home Premium (and x86 VirtualBox VM) CPU i3 370M Motherboard Asus Memory 8GB - finally :) Graphics Card it's an i3, dude! Hi Tom, No errors detected is always a nice thing to see!
I can't see anything of concern in your CBS log and your CheckSUR log is clean so in theory, the update should install now. But Windows Update can be a right pain sometimes so who knows! Try installing the update and let us know how you get on.
There was file corruption on your computer, which we fixed, but at this stage it is impossible to tell whether it caused your problem or not as we haven't tried updating. My money is on that being the cause though

Because I follow Noels and Toms work, it is very interesting. I do have a question.
Would doing a sfc /scannow before doing a SP-1 or I.E. 10 download and install help? | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home made Desktop OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. It's possibly a good idea before any SP install - but I wouldn't bother for a small update install (which is really what IE10 is, for all the hype) | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K52F OS Win 7 x64 Home Premium (and x86 VirtualBox VM) CPU i3 370M Motherboard Asus Memory 8GB - finally :) Graphics Card it's an i3, dude!
