Installing Service Pack 1 ruined everything

I suspect the OP did something wrong, it can't be "forced" on any PC, being pushed simply means it will download, but you still have the option not to install an update.

i typically only install the critical updates that involve remote attackers and such. i don't use IE, NET framework, defender, that other malware thing they send out and there are no local users other than myself. most updates don't affect me, so why would i want them? all my apps are portable, so i also do not care about needing this or that before i can install something...

that is how i had mine set until tuesday when it was announced they were going to push this to all users. until i know how the OP had his set (and received it anyway), it will remain turned off.

I installed SP1 a little over a week ago and had no problems whatsoever. Mileage varies with each person, though, due to system setups and such. There are so many variables that can affect a service pack update. But if you're good to keep things clean, you should be good to go. I was nervous to do it, but since it's pretty much mandatory now I had to go for it, and life is good.

Well, spoken like a true initiate. All the items you say you "don't use" have little to do with most updates. A better question for you , and others, is why not have them? Unless you have no space or run pirate software, there is absolutely no harm with them.

because i choose not to. and what's with the name calling? if i am an initiate, does that make you one of the MS sheeple?

i merely asked the OP what his update settings were and all i have gotten is advice on how i should be configuring my machine and now accused of running pirated software.

Jo6Pak I think you might be misunderstanding mine and others thoughts.
I don't care what you do or do not install on your computer. It's your computer do as you please.
Because the masses read our post we want to make sure they don't get the wrong information on installing SP-1 and other needed Windows Updates. At this time their has been 381 member looked at this thread and only 14 post. The closer we get to the cut off date of SP-1 their will be many more.
I think it would be safe to say that 99.9% of the members of this Forum keep there computers up to date.
For those that have problems keep their computer updated we are here to help and as always it's free help.

Britton 30 has give a couple of reason some people don't want or can't get updates. Their are more reason than those two. What ever the reason we can help those that want help.

The reason Microsoft does SP-1 with a cut off date, I don't know all their reasoning. It's their system and their updates so they make the rules. We don't own our copy of Windows 7. We just pay for the right to use it under the conditions they stipulate.

So I recommend everybody to keep their systems updated.

SP1 does ruin a good running system. Suffered 2 times already hoping that updating will do good. But killed my system both the times. But it is not supposed to ruin the system that way, making data dissappear.

Well, if you want to access your desktop data, then go to C:\Users\<username>\Desktop.

There you go. Things should probably be still there.

Not true at all. If SP1 fouls up a system there must be something wrong before the install. It did NOT make anything disappear on my three systems. I have solved any issues now by using a SP1 .iso to install with.

Maybe that's specific to you. In my case, installing SP1 on a clean, freshly installed Windows has always ruined it, not on a single machine, but a number uncountable. But using the ISO having SP1 integrated (the microsoft one) doesn't have any problems.
