Java Disabled on My Computer

I disabled Java in my Program and Features menu months ago. It was having trouble with it's programming and Windows users were suppose to turn it off. I haven't seemed to have needed it for anything. Now however, It says I need Java to look at real time market quotes through my brokerage. Is it OK to turn Java back up? I get regular Windows 7 updates as I am suppose to weekly. Thanks!

You need to update Java itself. Then I guess if you're brave enough to use it go ahead. I would strongly recommend checking for updates ..... every hour? Sorry, couldn't resist. There is NO other way to see your quotes? Turn it on. UPDATE it , make sure your anti-virus is on and.... pray.

Heres a link:http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/java-update.html

What do you mean "having trouble with its programming?" If your copy of Java is malfunctioning I would strongly suggest deleting it and reinstalling it. That might be a better idea anyway.

I have 15-minute delayed market quotes right now. Just thought real time quotes would be cool. But it's not necessary.....I am not a day trader. Seems I wasn't able to watch You Tube videos if memory serves me right with Java enabled but can't quite remember?? Also, to disable Java in a couple computer newsletters I get weekly.

Actually, I have my updates toggled to automatic so I get them and are installed as them come in. I have my back-ups scheduled automatically and weekly.

Yikes! What's wrong with Java that I have to be 'brave' to use it.

Its about the most hacked and hackable piece of software out there. Thats why you and everybody else has been advised to disable or get rid of it completely. It makes it quite easy for hackers/phishers/and other assorted bad guys to access your system.

Java does not update through Windows Update, you have to do it yourself. If you've had it turned off for a month or so theres a newer, slightly (for now) more secure version out. I don't trust it and will not have it on my machine. But thats me. Its imperative you update it as fast as possible if you want to use it. Good Luck! (Just follow my links in last post for updater or newer version)

No, I don't need it that bad! Certainly glad I posted! Thank you! I am going to delete Java completely in 'Program and Features' menu within the Control Panel.

Thats probably the best choice imho. I got rid of mine ...... gosh in December?, around there anyway, and have not missed it or needed it yet.

You're quite welcome, and if you ever need anything else,,,, we're always "open"!

I have not installed Java for well over a year now and in that time I found only one site that required it. I figured I didn't need to look at it and emailed the site admin explaining that.

Some people do use it but disable it until needed to view a specific site.

Is there a replacement out there for Java? What was Java's job in it hey day? I always thought it was one of the prominent programs that helped Windows do all it's operating.....? I will definitely get rid of it! Thanks so much!

BTW, It was quite an ordeal to sign up for real time quotes through my brokerage company. The application form was 5 screens deep asking for different permissions and my signature in a couple places. I just thought that odd to have that much security for a free app on their website. I see now it was a liability for them if I signed up for this service. I never finished the sign up because it wanted me to enable Java before preceeding on and I wanted to ask first. Thanks!
