Check out using the Windows Easy Transfer system for moving data across (perhaps to a prepared image on a fresh disk?)
It will move most data and settings across - but you'll have to reinstall programs.

Good thought. Heard about it, but had not looked in to it. If nothing else, it'd be good to check out what MS deems as valuable while I'm planning my non-system backups and moving "stuff" from the old XP systems. Did a quick Google, but didn't find a detail list of what's available to be moved. Know of any?

Nah - I prefer to pull stuff across from the old install, as it means that I can update the filing system in the process.

I'll ask around - somebody will get back to you.

I'm pretty much a manual-type too, but it's always good to double check that I'm not missing anything.

Many thanks.

I also prefer manually transferring files by dragging the active User folders, avoiding problems with WET.

In your case I would simply drag my User folders and any critical settings I need (google how to do this) for mail, Office, etc. over to the Home Premium machine and then ship the Pro machine for service. It needs to have it's original hardware for servicing anyway.

You can already have your latest file set living in the cloud using a process similar to Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Forums

For the most part, I avoid the standard "user" areas for data as they have been oft-reported as hacker targets. But I know there's some "stuff/settings" that can't be avoided. Mostly I've been lucky only to deal with single-user systems, so it's not that big of a deal. I'm quite familiar with locations for the Mail stores, Favorites, and Start Menu type stuff. But I think I'm going to have to multi-user laptop #2 so it's easier to help the "owner" of laptop #1 if she gets herself into trouble. And I'm not a fan of "Cloud" anything.

That makes at least two of us then

I have to admit that I find SkyDrive useful - but only in a very limited sense.

There is no way that I'd rely on net access for my personal data files - especially as for most of today, my connection has been dropping at least every minute!
(I started a 100MB upload to my SkyDrive at 9a.m. - it's still going, and I have no idea when/if it'll finish.

[edit] - I just checked, and it has finally finished! [/edit]

Reminds me too much of my mainframe days with remote terminals -- quite locked down. My experience with computers pre-dates the first IBM PC by several years...

I use Skydrive to sync my PC's across the room and across the country. It's never missed a beat in a year's trial period. I even keep a complete archive of all versions of every file by having SyncToys backup up all of the changes twice a week to a Skydrive backup folder. It's my own personal server.

I like Skydrive a lot better than Win8 because they got it right.
