Please run the CheckSUR tool again and post a new log - it may be able to fix a few more errors, and the resulting log will be much easier to read and attempt to produce fix instructions from (if it's possible at all)

I had the same problems when SP1 and IE9 were released and I had to reinstall Windows to resolve the problem!

Hello XYZ1234 and welcome to the forums

I've spent hours on end trying to fix problems with missing winners keys in the past but I've never had any success. I have lots of data from each case and I'm trying to spot patterns between them with a view to hopefully finding a potential fix for this. Would you mind uploading some data for me please? I would be most appreciative if you could and should I find a solution, I'll post instructions for you to fix this.

Export registry as hive

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit.
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
  6. Name this file SideBySide (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Upload a file to Dropbox

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.

  1. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
  2. Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:

    https://www.dropbox.com/install
  3. After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.

    Favourites%20list.PNG
  4. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon
    icon.jpg
found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
  5. Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:

    • C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS (it has no file extension)
    • C:\Users\{Your Username}\Desktop\SideBySide (it has no file extension)

  6. Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  7. This will create a .zip
    zip_icon.png
    file in your Public folder.
  8. Right-click on this file and select Dropbox > Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl + V) this link into your next post for me please

I appreciate your willingness to help.

Here is a link to my public Skydrive folder with the zip file.

I hope that you guys know what you are doing (actually, I do not have doubts about that) and posting such a huge file from my system does not compromise my privacy and security.

Sorry, my chatting with Noel here won't have filled you with confidence! I can assure you that I would never post anything without being 100% confident in it and if there was a risk of something going pear shaped then I would warn you first as well as taking backups. Noel and I have both dealt with hundreds of Windows Update problems in the past and have quite a bit of experience with the various errors so you're in safe hands :)

As for the large files, there is nothing in either of them that poses any risk to you, for either privacy or security reasons. The COMPONENTS file is a registry hive containing the list of all of the installed Windows Updates and their various components. The information we see from it looks something like this:

6.png

The SideBySide export that you have given us is for very similar information but also contains the list of Winners registry keys you have on your computer. The errors in your CheckSUR log was for missing Winners keys so that is why I asked for it.

Tom

P.S. Thanks for the files! I will have a look at them now.

No problem, we'll have you up and running in no time. You'll be glad to hear that, with the help of your data, I think I've finally found the cause of this problem! Now I need to confirm this with a few tests on my virtual machine before getting a fix posted for you.

Hi XYZ1234,

I've spent hours on end looking through your registry exports and comparing to what I think they should be. There are a few inconsistencies which I was very hopeful for when I post a few days ago but when I test these on my system, none of them have generated the error you face. I am currently in the process of setting up my virtual machine to be as similar to your system as possible - basically, I took your registry exports and incorporated them into my registry. The SURT now takes up to 6 hours to run as it corrects all of the problems! The last run showed this:

Code:
Found 21652 errors
Fixed 14130 errors

I haven't forgotten about you, it's just that this is a very slow process :(

Tom

It is strange that SURT takes so long on your machine - on my two year old computer, it takes much less and finds not so many errors, I think (it is all in the log files but I forgot).

It is strange that SURT takes so long on your machine - on my two year old computer, it takes much less and finds not so many errors, I think (it is all in the log files but I forgot).

My machine isn't the problem, 4.5GHz and 8GB of RAM is plenty to run a VM, the scale of what I'm trying to do is the problem here. Say each error takes one second to fix, then 22000 errors is 6 hours and 6 minutes to complete. By forcing your registry into mine, the SURT is now essentially aligning the various files and registry keys in the best way possible as I will have plenty of registry keys for non existent files and vice versa :) Each run is getting faster, and improving though. I'm now down to ~7000 errors and it's flatlining at that number:

Code:
Summary:
Seconds executed: 5967
 Found 7522 errors
CSI Create Hard Link Failed Total count: 36
CSI Manifest Missing Total count: 3115
CSI Manifest and S256H Do Not Match Total count: 6
CSI Payload File Missing Total count: 4353
CSI Missing Winning Component Key Total count: 12

Fortunately, I now have some missing Winning Component Keys to work with!

Silly question, Tom - what about the Catroot2 folder? possible cause?

Far from a silly question :) I'm 99% sure this is a registry problem but it's definitely worth trying something with the catroot2 folder.
