Windows 7: Windows 7 not genuine

Windows 7 not genuine

I am getting the not genuine windows version of windows popups. My machine has a licence and has worked fine up until a few days ago.

Here's what happened:

1. Disk head crash, completely unreadable.
2. Bought and installed new disk.
3. Unable to restore, because of the (incredibly irritating and stupid) Samsung recovery area not setup.
4. Sent machine to Samsung who did a full factory reset.
5. Restored my machine from the Samsung backup(which on pain of death I will never use again).

Now, the popups started almost immediately, windows update won't work and I have contacted microsoft who talked me through resetting activation using a SLUI command. Didn't work.

When I do a validate, I get this:

"Files that Windows needs to work properly have been modified, removed, or disabled. To resolve, you need to install genuine Windows. Not to worry, we can help you with that."

When I view the activation window, the license ID is not my actual license ID. It is some OEM one (I guess) used by the engineer who factory reset my machine. When I attempt to change it, it stays the same.

Yes I know. I was rather hoping not to go through the hassle of doing this, then having to reinstall all the drivers software and samsung backup on top of this.

Samsung provides a utility to do the driver/utility updates, assuming you have network/internet access once your rebuild is complete. It's called SW Update, and should be available from the "downloads" page of the support for your Samsung make/model. Once downloaded and installed, you can use it to get the latest drivers and BIOS/firmware updates, as well as any Samsung software (or crapware, depending) you want to reinstall on your PC.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

(you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

Fantastic! That has fixed the validation issue.

Now I can't start windows update. It says the service is not running.
I have set BITS to delayed start and it is active, as is windows update. I ran the FIXIT from this site...
Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working

It didn't work.

Thanks for all help.

OK, I've sussed this one out from a similar problem.

The fix was to delete Windows/Softwaredistribution folder with windows update task stopped, then reboot.

Now working.

Please close this thread as resolved. Kudos to the people on this forum!!

[edit] - this would have been my first response to the WU problem - a lot less damaging than removing the SD folder! [/edit]

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

TBH, if you got that fix from the Answers forums, it's probably best to ignore anything from their 'Support Engineers', who appear to have about as much knowledge of real-world computing as I do about orbital mechanics.
