Purchased Used laptop, after 3 months windows isnt genuine.

Bought this laptop a few months ago from a coworker who i cant get in touch with to help with the problem im having. I do not have the OEM Vista key because the COA sticker is damaged and I didnt receive any of the packaging or paperwork from either the laptop or the 7 upgrade when i purchased the computer. After an update windows said it wasnt genuine. I have run sfc \ scannow and windows found a few corrupt files but succesfully repaired them. still having validation issues. Is there anything i can do besides contact HP for an OEM vista restore disk or purchasing a new Product Key for windows?

Hello and welcome DJMB mate I can tell you now I would be cutting my losses and slip in a new drive and get yourself an OEM 7 OS.

Upgrades in my mind are a nightmare and frankly not worth the grief.

But there will be someone who can help you though this but for what its worth

Well no good news from me DJMB I have fixed a few Vistas recently and I never found any ISO downloads or places where I could get the disks mate. You may get lucky and get a Vista install set but again it has to be a retail set that hasn't been used too many times as the activations are tied to the boards they were originally put on.

Even if you found an ISO to install from the fact that you haven't got that number on the sticker is going to make it worthless.
I wish I could help you maybe someone else can. What you could do is just get an OEM 7 and forget the drive I suppose but it is still going to cost - about $99 out here. .

There's not much of a choice. You will need a valid key for any Windows OS. You could always install Ubuntu until you can afford to buy a valid version of Windows. When a deal is too good to be true, it usually is.

Hey what a great idea carwiz you genius you!!

DJMB if you want to do that just make a bootable disk with Ubuntu set to BIOS to boot from the optical and your on !! It will give you the option of just running it or install too.

Takes a little bit of getting used to but I like it as an alternative and you don't have to worry about updates and security so much .

Why didn't I think of that!!

The Product Key is from an Acer machine
Your machine is an HP/Compaq - and cannot therefore support an Acer Key.
For what version and edition of Windows is the COA Sticker on the case valid? (I suspect, it's Win7 Home Premium?)
You need to reinstall the original OS with which the machine shipped and then apply a legitimate upgrade to Ultimate (if you need Ultimate at all)
