Interesting - here's the remaining error from the SFC scan....
    Code:
     Line 10272: 2013-05-03 11:25:39, Info CSI 00000321 [SR] Repairing 1 components

Line 10278: 2013-05-03 11:25:39, Info CSI 00000325 [SR] Cannot verify component files for Microsoft-Windows-WindowsUpdateClient-Core, Version = 7.6.7600.256, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral, manifest is damaged (TRUE)

I would have expected CheckSUR to find that.

I'll post a fix for it later today (I hope - my connection is massively unstable at present!)

    I've uploaded a file -tanaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\tanaa

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\tanaa
    or
    DIR E:\tanaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\tanaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs\Manfests /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g.XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs\Manifests /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file

Also run a new CheckSUR scan, and post the new CheckSUR.log file

I get an error when I run the command
    XCOPY c:\tanaa c:\windows\winsxs\Manfests /y /i /s /v /h
    C:\Users\Anthony>xcopy c:\tanaa c:\windows\winsxs\manifests /y/i/s/v/h
    Access denied
Unable to create directory - C:\windows\winsxs\manifests
    0 File(s) copied
Do you want me to put the file in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests and run CheckSUR as we did for the other files that were missing on page 1 of this marathon?

    Ah, good!

Both CheckSUR and SFC are now clear - what about the rest of your symptoms?
Please don't attempt to install IE10 yet, until you've checked that everything else works properly - failed installs have a nasty habit of being reparable only by a repair install of the OS.

The only thing I seem to have a problem with now is installing SQL 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, this hasn't installed for ages. Everything else seems ok.
I may leave IE 10 for a while...

    Thanks for all your help.

SQL is something I know absolutely nothing about :|
Hopefully, at least Windows Update will now work properly when the patches come out on Tuesday week - 14th May.

    Good luck!
