Windows Update KB2840149 - Why was it required?

    Dear Forum,

I know that I am not going that well on computer issues.

I am just wondering on the difference on optional and important updates with regards to Windows.

I noticed that I only had one update that had to be uploaded. I usually have more than one.

I guess I am just curious.

Is it preferable or just up the OP on what they upload to the system. I noticed that when I had issues with N360 the customer service person installed all the remaining optional updates.

    Thank you

Microsoft uses different update classifications to rate the importance of the update. A critical update is usually meant to fix a security issue. Important updates usually fix non-security issues that can affect how a Microsoft product works. Microsoft recommends that critical and important updates always be installed. Optional updates are strictly user discretion. Nothing bad should happen if you choose not to install an optional update. I always recommend creating a restore point (at a minimum) before installing any updates just in case the update(s) break something. These two Microsoft articles explain a bit more.

    Fast Facts About Microsoft Update

On April 9 (2nd Tuesday of the month, the regularly scheduled Patch Tuesday, when Microsoft releases it patches, hotfixes, etc) KB2823324 was one of the updates. On April 11 Microsoft announced that this update was causing issues for many people and recommended that it be removed. On or about April 23, Microsoft releasd KB2840149 which was a replacement for KB2823324. That might be the one update you received (instead of the usual multiple updates.)

I am sorry that I did not follow the rules for posting the above information - I did not know that was the proper way to present them.

I thank you for response. I was just confused about critical and optional updates, plus just the one that was recently installed.
