Windows could not search for new updates Error 800706BA

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
Dell Inspiron 1545
Pentium Dual Core T4400 @ 2.2GHz
3GB RAM
64 bit OS

I tried to use Windows Update by clicking [Check for updates] but then I receive this message:
Name: WindowsUpdateNeddsAnUpdate.gif
Views: 5
Size: 26.5 KB

I click [Install Now], it tries and then…

Name: WindowsUpdateErrorCode800706BA.gif
Views: 5
Size: 26.6 KB

...a failure reporting Error 800706BA

I have tried the Microsoft Fixit diagnostic here: Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working

These are the results it came back with:

Name: MS_Fixit_DiagnosisComplete.gif
Views: 5
Size: 20.2 KB

And then after running it came back with this:
Name: MS_Fixit_TriubleshootingComplete.gif
Views: 5
Size: 23.5 KB

I've tried a bit of diagnosis of the issue myself, but keep coming back to this issue of not being able to update Windows Update!

Help would be appreciated as I have spent 2 days already on this.

Thanks.

Running sfc /scannow resulted in error

Hi. I followed the instructions, downloaded SURT and ran it.
I then ran the SFC scan which gave the result shown here:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 7% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

C:\Windows\system32>

I include the CBS log.CBS - Copy (3).zip

Please follow the instructions fully!

The minimal data so far provided gives this for the failure of the SFC...
Code:
2013-05-05 14:52:46, Error                 CSI    0000002f (F) STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST #917562# from Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::DirectFileSystemProvider::SysReadFile(h = 4b0 ("\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-audio-dmusic_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_a1e90d98a953d601\dmsynth.dll"), evt = 0, apcr = NULL, apcc = NULL, iosb = @0x87cbf0, data = {l:0 b:}, byteoffset = 65536 (0x0000000000010000), key = (null))

Please run a full CHKDSK scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC /SCANNOW again, and see if it completes properly this time.

Also - please check in diskmgmt.msc for the list of partitions on your hard drive - what are they listed as?

Post the FULL results - including CheckSUR.log and CBS.log files.

Check Disk Fixed it!

Thanks for your help. After the checkdisk ran (this took all night) it found a few bad files and fixed them. When the laptop re-started, all the updates kicked-off with no problem, and things seem to be OK now.

Thanks again for helping out with this.

You're welcome.
You should check the results of the CHKDSK command to make sure that it's not a failing disk.

Open Event Viewer, and navigate in the left pane to \Windows logs\Application
You should find the CHKDSK results as an event from source WININIT - you can either hunt for it, or use the Filter options.
If it says there are 'bad sectors' then think about replacing the hard drive.
