Black desktop & not genuine message (Windows 7 home premium)

Hi All,

I got a laptop with Windows 7 Home premium edition on it from a friend.
Turning it on I am able to reach the normal screen with the welcome word, however
after that instead to see the normal Windows 7 desktop I see a black screen the mouse cursor
and a text on the right bottom saying that that copy of Windows 7 (build 7601) is not genuine.
As a general information, under the laptop there is product key code.
Before writing here I just checked the entire system for malware viruses and so on using
the kaspersky rescue disk without finding any problems.

The following is the output from the MGADiag tool. After clicking on the Copy button however
I got a message from the tooll saying that were problems copying text...

Thank you

Yes. I forgot to say that in Safe Mode I was able to see and work on the Windows 7 desktop and so run MGADiag.

Any idea how to solve this?

Thank you

Please boot to Normal Mode and run the tool again - post the new results.

Being in a non-genuine state does not affect most of the functionality of Windows.

I wasn't clear, sorry.

Booting in normal mode I see only these things:
  • A black screen ( when it was supposed to see the desktop )
  • The mouse cursor (which I can move)
  • A sentence about my not genuine copy of Windows 7

I cannot do anything in this situation, I have no explorer or desktop or anything to click on.
I don't know exactly what happened on this PC, but I'm pretty sure this is a genuine copy of Windows 7 preinstalled
on the laptop. Its product key code is under the laptop.

Any suggestion?

Thank you

You should be able to cancel the notification , which then allows you into your normal desktop (apart from the background)

If not, then you have more problems than just a WGA one.

Try this...

(the CHKDSK should work from Safe Mode - the SFC may not)

Ooops!
thanks for the eagle-eye, Tom!

You should be able to cancel the notification , which then allows you into your normal desktop (apart from the background)

If not, then you have more problems than just a WGA one.

Try this...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

(the CHKDSK should work from Safe Mode - the SFC may not)

No problem, I thought it looked a bit bare! I've lost count of the number of times we've picked up on mistakes in eachothers' posts
