have lost my activation code and reinstalled windows

    Hi

I lost my windows cd and packaging when I moved house, I wanted to do a reinstall but obviously didn't have the activation key. I got some duff advice about the product ID number being the activation code and burned a copy of Windows 7 from digital rivers.

I have since performed the reinstall with formatted hard drives. I'm guessing I'm pretty much screwed at this point but thought I would post this here before I fork out £150 on a new activation code.

Is there anything I can do?

    Regards

Why do a reinstall knowing you had no key?
You might try a call to MS and see what happens.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you will need to purchase a new Product Key for a Professional licence. A cheaper option would be to purchase a Home Premium one (you will need to reinstall) unless you have over-riding reason for using Professional.

    Damn, oh well.

Looking on amazon and the OEM version is a lot cheaper, will that install on my non self built system somehow, or am I forking out £130 for the regular version?

    Cheers

You can install the OEM version. The drawbacks are it will be forever tied to the PC it is installed on and no MS support for it.

You're welcome. A full retail version can be reinstalled several times as long as it's only on one PC at any given time.

A good alternative, get both Windows 7 & 8, Office (several versions) plus a lot more with a Microsoft TechNet Standard Subscription, €213.00 (£133.55 or $199.00) + VAT.
