Non-valid product key after Clean reinstall win7

About a month ago I built my first PC and had some BSOD issues which I am getting help with on this forum. We decided it was a good idea to try a clean reinstall of Win7. So I did and now I have tried to enter my product key again and it tells me that the product key is not valid. I did check and recheck that it was typed correctly. Heres the BSOD thread for more info:
Random BSOD New build 0x800... event id 1001
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hi kenh536

The Key you're using is a Windows 7 Home Premium default key that can't be activated . Please use the key that came with the disc .

I don't understand what you mean. The only code I have is what came on the box with the disc for OEM Windows 7 64 bit. I used that code to activate the first install, then ended up formatting and doing a clean reinstall. After that I entered the product key I have from the box and it will not accept it. It tells me that it is invalid.

Does the key match the number on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker you attached to your PC?

Where did you buy your copy of Windows 7?

How to know you're buying genuine Windows - Microsoft Windows

If I am not mistaken the key in the log is the Default key . If you don't add a Key during installation that's the key that is generated . Which you can't activate . To activate you would need to use a legit key which should be inside the DVD case inside a Retail box .

I bought it from OutletPC. The box came in a sleeve, remove the sleeve and on the outside of the box is the sticker with the product key on it. Inside of it is the disc, some card saying to stick the sticker on the PC, and a Windows 7 getting started booklet. Looks genuine to me and I payed $89.99 for it.

I did not add the key during install, so thats why it shows the default. My issue is, when I try to use the key now inside Windows (it worked and activated the first install before reinstall) it says invalid and does not accept it. Therefore I cannot activate it because it will not accept the only key I have.

Try to activate using the phone

Click on the button type slui.exe 4 inside the Search programs and files box and press <Enter> if you get a User Access Control click on the Yes button . On the window that comes up choose United States and click Next . It will give you a 800 number .

Double check to see that you've not misread a character - either C/G/6 or B/8 or Y/V are the most common.

Note that the following characters cannot be used - A E I L N O S U Z 1 0 - an O/0 is almost always a Q

If that doesn't work, try the phone activation method.

Well either I messed up typing the code about 4 times in a row before, or it just didn't work for some reason. The former is more likely... anyway just got it to work so now I am activated. I appreciate all the responses guys, thanks.
