Windows Update KB976932 and Error 0x8024200D

Hello,

I have been struggling with this error for the past 3 weeks. Every time my laptop attempts installation, I'd get Error 0x8024200D.

Time and again I've ran System Update Readiness Tool and attempted manual installation of Update KB976932 without success. Whenever I try to manually install, I'd receive the following: Error 0x80070002.

Several times I've ran SFC /SCANNOW command, and the results reveal there's some corrupt files, but could not be fixed by System File Checker.

I wish I could upload my .zip file of CBS log here, but it's far too big. Instead I'll just post a screenshot.

Delete the oldest two CBSPersist files, then zip the folder and upload it.

The 0x8024200D error is usually caused by connectivity problems - what AV and Firewall are you using?

I deleted the two oldest files and zipped my CBS folder as instructed, and it's 20.0 MB -- still too big to upload. Should I delete one or two more CBSPersist files?

I'm using Kaspersky Anti-Virus (I assume that's what you mean by "AV") and Windows Firewall. Oh, that reminds me: I forgot to mention that I've attempted manual installation in clean boot, and still failed.

The CBS.log file and the CheckSUR.log file are the important ones - but the CBS is huge (much bigger than normal), and even zipped may well overflow the forums size allowance.
I suggest zipping it up and uploading it to SkyDrive/Dropbox or other favoured fileshare site, and posting a link.

Hi zfsed07, welcome to SevenForums!

To fix an 0x8024200D error, all you need to do is download the update from the Microsoft Download Centre instead of Windows Update:

Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Centre

You want the file: windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

As for your SFC issue, it's nothing to worry about and isn't corrupt at all. The file that's 'corrupt' is tcpmon.ini which is a configuration file - if any setting in this gets changed then Windows, incorrectly, thinks this is corrupt.

It's akin to the settings.ini problem of Windows Sidebar: The SFC.exe command reports Settings.ini file errors in the CBS.log file after you add gadgets to the Windows Vista Sidebar by using the Sysprep tool and an Autounattend.xml file

I attempted manual installation of update KB976932 in clean boot yet again (this time with my AV disabled) and still failed. I got the following:

Error: ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND(0x80070002)

I've ran System Update Readiness several times and Microsoft Fix-It twice in the past week, and neither seem to help much with the issue.

This bug is tougher than I thought.

Hi Zoe,

Okay, let's have a look what went wrong.

Export CBS folder
1. Click the Start button then click Computer.
2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Attach CBS.zip to your next post please!

I'm getting frustrated with this bug. At least you're taking your time to try resolving this, Tom, and I'm grateful for that.

Okay, getting a little warmer now. The only 0x2s I could find in your log were these:

These all indicate a few missing registry keys and values, so let's put those back in :)

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
6. SFCFix will now process the script.
7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.
Then try updating and zip up your CBS log if it fails (just the log, not the whole folder this time).
