Hello,
I play a lot of PC games, and in one particular game, I have been having a graphical glitch. This is apparently related to the Windows KB2670838 update, and many people on various forums have solved the problem by removing this update.
I first tried removing the update from 'Programs and Features -> Installed updates', but get an error 0x80073701 'referenced assembly not found'.
Instead I tried to uninstall using the command prompt 'wusu', then tried again in safe mode, and even tried uninstalling IE10, the apparent cause for this update in the first place.
None of these attempts have succeeded for one reason or another, and I wondered if anyone has any help?

I already tried this whilst following one of the other instructions, but I've tried again.
It only took about a second, and went straight from 0% to 'did not find any integrity violations'.

Odd - I've never seen so short a log!
Please post the entire CBS folder - you'll need to zip it, then perhaps strip out the oldest CBSPersist file(s) to get it inside the forum's posting limits.

Thanks, Tom! (have a good holiday :))

Rsstn - please upload your COMPONENTS file so I can see how bad it is....

Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to the
C:\Windows\System32\config
folder - you should find a large COMPONENTS file (no extension)
copy it to your desktop, then Zip the copy, and upload it to your SkyDrive/DropBox or other favoured fileshare site, and post a link in your reply.

Ok, here you go, the zip file is here: http://db.tt/S5MU96xU. So if this is the problem, what does that mean for me/my computer? What exactly do you think is wrong?
Thanks for all your help so far!

I'm afraid the situation there looks terminal - all the data that should be present is either hidden or missing completely.

There's a vague possibility that a System Restore may help - you'll need to go back to a few days prior to first noticing the problem and see.

If that doesn't help, then the only options will be either a Repair Install, or a Clean install.

Hmm...
I first noticed this around 5-6 months ago. My OS was installed 9 months ago, so I would be so far back if I used a system restore point, I may as well re-install windows! What could have happened to cause this? Is this caused by an error during install (or do you even know how)? Everything works fine apart from uninstalling updates, and I don't particularly want to re-install windows again, as I've done that only 9 months ago.
Thanks,
Ross.

From what I can see, it's possible that at some time the file was completely deleted, which effectively removed all possibility of recovering it. This could have been a hardware problem, or over-zealous cleanup, or a deletion in error.

Download the SP1 Refresh for your language and edition from the links on these pages...

Heidoc - Microsoft DR Download links

The links are for downloads from the Digital River servers run for MS, so are about as safe as you can get :)

Once you have it downloaded, you then need to burn the DVD from it - use either the Windows Disk Image Burner, or (better still) your favourite burning application at the slowest speed possible.

Note that you do NOT 'drag and drop' the file to the disk, you must use the 'burn an image' option from your app - or you'll end up with a useless coaster :)

Once you have the disk burnt, check that it boots the (or any other) system OK - but do NOT start the repair from there - you must start the repair from within a normal Windows boot.

Follow the instructions in this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
- and they should help you get through it (it's not as difficult as it looks!)
