Nah - there was a spurious space in the version numbering, which split the code badly.

It looks as if the problem lies inthis area....
    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\amd64_sffdisk.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17 514_none_02618e7200897e0a"

    (at least partially!)
I need to check and see if I can work out a consequence-tree and check other areas.

Just as well I checked -turned out there was a typo introduced in the other command when I repaired the extra soace

Please run this command and post the results.

    Code:
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\amd64_sffdisk.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16438_none_00698d0a036fb7e7" /S

OK - try this one, then....

    Code:
    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\amd64_sffdisk.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16438_none_00698d0a036fb7e7" /S
    REG UNLOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS

    .
If that still draws a blank, it could be our root cause.

    Here you go:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONEN
    TS
    The operation completed successfully.

    C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Compone
    nts\amd64_sffdisk.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16438_none_00698d0a036fb7e7" /S
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

    C:\Windows\system32>
    C:\Windows\system32>REG UNLOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS
    The operation completed successfully.

    C:\Windows\system32>

The second command ran as I pasted it into the cmd prompt, I didn't have to hit enter. Does this have anything to do with it? The other two commands I have to hit enter for it to run.

    Nope - that's fine :)

Back in a few minutes with a (hopeful) fix protocol.

    I've uploaded a file - reginf.zip - to my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=936736bb8fceb92f#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21796
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Save it to the default location
This should create a file reginf.reg

Now open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following command

    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS

right-click on the reginf.reg file, and select Merge
Accept the warnings, - you should then get a 'Success' message.
    Close all windows, and reboot.

Then run another SFC /SCANNOW, and reboot again, then post the new CBS.log file

Run Windows Update and do a Check for Updates - then attempt to install the oldest found update.

    what happens now?
