Hello and welcome Almac mate have you tried a system restore to before the updates?

First try the restore from safe mode if possible if that doesn't work try SFC and chkdsk SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    Disk Check

Now what model is the Asus it is quite handy to have a few specs to work on if you have backed up your stuff? cos you may have to factory default the thing or use any media you got with the machine. If you haven't got media then don't worry as you can do a clean install from a stick or disk using an ISO and the activation code on the Microsoft sticker just that you will lose all data. .

    Thanks.
Unfortunately when the computer crashed & I had to restart, it said something about it would delete restore points (which seemed strange), but gave me no other alternative. So I now only have those from 2010.
BUT anyway, when checking the System info screen in Control Panel, I saw "Change Product Key" which I tried, & entered the Product Key from the CoA on the bottom of the laptop & hey presto, the Activation was successful. (& the "not genuine" message has now disappeared).
I cannot recall whether I had ever "activated " it before or not.
Anyway, fingers crossed that all is now OK. I will do a new system restore point now.

The problem is that your system is unable to properly read the BIOS SLIC table that should be present in the system to be able to self-activate the OS.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.
