Yes, I checked that - they do. See attached screencap for specifics. Note that there is only one user on my system, and it is an Admin account.

They should be OK, then

Your latest CBS log is free of any significant errors.

Please run the CheckSUR tool again, and post the new CheckSUR.log file - it will tell us how much remains to be done.

CheckSUR gave some interesting results - attached are both of it's very small log files.

I also tried the following:

1. Downloaded the Office 2010 SP2 update file from MS and ran it directly, thus bypassing the Windows Update procedure. It said Installation Failed right after the "Determining which files to update."

2. Found a recent thread from the same problem that said to do a Repair function on Office 2010 from Control Panel/Programs & Features. When I tried this nothing at all happened - no message, no error, nothing.

So I'm thinking there is something wacked with my Office 2010 install. Not sure what to do about that - it all seems to work OK.

OK - the two remaining files which need to be fixed are...
Code:
Checking Component Store
(f) CSI Payload File Missing 0x00000000 desktop.ini amd64_microsoft-windows-ehome-samplemedia_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_b6b9b223710b3802
(f) CSI Payload File Missing 0x00000000 win7_scenic-demoshort_raw.wtv amd64_microsoft-windows-ehome-samplemedia_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_b6b9b223710b3802
I'm not sure why those should have any impact - but the ways of Windows are wondrous!

I'll post a fix for these two later.

Thanks (again) for your help with this.

"Wondrous" is actually not the adjective I'd use - but that's a different issue.

I've uploaded a file - bbdab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\bbdab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\bbdab
or
DIR E:\bbdab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\bbdab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g.XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run CheckSUR gain and post the results - hopefully it will be clear of everything except the usual IE10 cockups.

OK - these look a bit more encouraging.

I'll try the update again and post results here.

Nope - no joy. Both the direct download & Windows Update install failed the same ways as before.

The two files are still showing as corrupt -
Please run following commands, and post the results.

DIR C:\bbdab
DIR c:\windows\winsxs\bbdab

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Perhaps I have misunderstood your instructions, but I have no bbdab subdirectory for WINXSX. What I did was copy your directories into WINSXS, replacing the subdirectories of the same name that were already there.

Here are the results of the DIR command on your source directories:

X:\work>dir x:\work\bbdaa
Volume in drive X is SSD-64GB
Volume Serial Number is BFCA-B410

PS: Thanks for the tip on how to copy text from the cmd window. It simply never occurred to me to r-click on it.

You seem to have got it right - there shouldn't be a bbdab folder in winsxs

This could mean that the problem is in the registry, rather than the file system.

I'm too tired to do it tonight - but I'll try and get to it tomorrow, and see how best to approach it.

If you haven't heard from me by this time Tuesday, SHOUT!
