Windows 7: Windows Update Error Code 80070643 + log info

Thanks.

My guess is the issue is either some sort of registry problem or some odd/obscure problem with the Office 2010 files themselves. As I said before, I'm thinking the most efficient way to resolve this would be to de-install Office 2010 and then reload it from some downloadable install package that has the SP2 update incorporated in it. But if you have a better idea I'd sure love to hear it.

I've spent many hours attempting to resolve install/update issues with past versions of Office, so I know how vexing these problems can be. But since I am no longer earning money from doing Office development work (actually Access database applications) I may be willing to risk the de-install/re-install option.

I am aware of the OFCLEAN routine that used to be available to clean up Office de-installs, so I'll see what I can find out about a version of that for Office 2010. Of course I'll also have to find an Office 2010 + SP2 download. I haven't started looking for that yet.

Thanks again for your help with this.

I just unzipped your files to my other SSD which is where I put all my temporary stuff. I didn't think it much mattered where the source files were - as long as they ended up i WINSXS.

OK - thanks.

Have you read about the huge problem SP2 has for Outlook users? Apparently any time someone pulls up their calendar Outlook floods their log file with zillions of messages that can consume gigabyes of space.

I don't use Outlook so I'm not worried about that one, but it's got some people to de-install SP2.

Close - but no cigar!

Apparently my problem has to do with a missing MSOCACHE folder. I deleted this to save space on my SSD drive. There are no formal instructions on how to get it back, but after some searching I found this:

Copy all files from ProPlus.WW map in Office 2010 Pro CD/ISO and paste into C\MSOCache\All Users\{90140000-0011-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}-C. If this map don't exist, create one and paste.

Run update (SP2) from downloaded .exe file (with Office 2010 Pro CD in computer).

So I did that and ran the SP@ installer again. It got farther - actually went through installing files - but then asked for the Office 2010 Pro CD (which I have.) It said it was looking for file ProPlusrWW.MSI which I found in the ProPlysr.WW directory on the CD. So I pointed to this and then got the inevitable "Installation Failed" message.

I found these lines in the SP2 installer log file:

MSI (s) (B0:5C) [15:44:49:586]: Windows Installer installed an update. Product Name: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. Product Version: 14.0.7015.1000. Product Language: 0. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Update Name: Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2687455) 64-Bit Edition. Installation success or error status: 1603.

MSI (s) (B0:5C) [15:44:49:586]: Note: 1: 1729
MSI (s) (B0:5C) [15:44:49:586]: Product: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 -- Configuration failed.

MSI (s) (B0:5C) [15:44:49:586]: Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. Product Version: 14.0.7015.1000. Product Language: 0. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Reconfiguration success or error status: 1603.

Stuck again.

Yes - none of those applies to me.

I also found this:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...=1375286609163

which makes me think the SP2 update really is not ready for prime time. I will start a new thread there for my problem, but I think doing that will result in little/no useful info.

Some of the guys there are really good - certainly a lot better at Office problems that I could ever pretend to be.
