Hi malon,

Sorry for the delay! I was away for a couple of days.

Can you run this FixIt in Aggressive Mode please:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336

Then reboot and try to update again.

I ran the FixIt with both options and both yield the same result.

Hi Malon,

Hmm, looks like we're doing this manually. Can you follow the instructions in the Let me fix this myself section please:

You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services

tom982,
There is no Automatic Update service listed in Standard or Extended.

I just want to add....

I noticed in event viewer the OP posted screenshots of, that it kept referring to the temp folder.

OP, Can you delete all temporary files and temp files?

Control panel-internet options-delete. Check all boxes except passwords and restart.

Also delete files in the temp folder. You can see this video on how to.

Alternatively you can download CCleaner in my sig and run the cleanup on the built in settings.
Just open it and hit run cleaner. That will do everything for you.

That's not good! Wait, do you mean windows update? You are looking for windows update in services, not automatic update. Automatic update service was in xp, not windows 7. It's called windows update now.

Still, I suggest doing the following:

Go here ------> Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7

Scroll down to windows update. Download and merge the reg file. Restart. You should then get your windows update service back and this might fix the issue since we tried everything else at this point it seems.

Hopefully you do not have to do a repair install.

Hi malon,

The good news is, neither do I! Let's scrap that plan, I didn't think that one through.

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    NET STOP WUAUSERV
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDTemp
    NET START WUAUSERV

  4. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  5. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

tom982, here you go.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>net stop wuauserv
The Windows Update service is stopping.
The Windows Update service was stopped successfully.

C:\Windows\system32>ren c:\windows\softwaredistribution sdtemp

C:\Windows\system32>net start wuauserv
The Windows Update service is starting.
The Windows Update service was started successfully.

C:\Windows\system32>

Andrew129260, this is all confusing enough so I'm hesitant to head down a different path without some concurrence from tom982 and Noel.

Still fails. Error code 80004002. Doing a check of installed updates shows no updates have ever been installed. Too weird. Laptop behaves fine in every other respect.
