That all looks perfectly OK to me - so I'll have to try something else (I just don't know what, yet )

I'm going to put out a call for someone more expert than me - don't run away!

I have no place to go. I so appreciate your help. Everything seems fine with the laptop other than this Windows Update issue. Even iTunes is acting more reliably these days.

No problem - my expert seems to be tied up at the moment, as I've not heard back from him either (either here or elsewhere).

Shout again in another 24 hours - or if you're desperate, three's always the option of a repair install :)

If we have to go down this path, would the Repair Install option remove all installed programs and data?

In theory all installed programs would be unaffected, as would data - but as always with major system upgrades, there is a slight risk, so BACK UP first! (preferably to external media)

There are a number of settings that would be reset - and uninstalling AV is pretty much a necessity, but they are relatively minor aggravations.

Seemingly not - he may be out of the country (he's a student, so...)
