Is it always a BSOD or Error msg?

Is that what generally happens if there's a problem with an update?

Nope - it all depends on what the exact problem is.
Almost anything is possible, depending on the state of the system before the update, and the type of conflict that exists to cause a problem.

Was just wondering 'cuz I've held off on so many updates due to postings about BSOD & I have never had one so wouldn't have the foggiest idea of what to do if I did.
