Problems with installing 2 updates

Greetings!

This is my first post ever to any forum so I hope this turns out right

I have a buddy who had a stroke a few years back, so I built him a computer to keep him attached to the outside world. It is a Intel 4 core desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, using MS Security Essentials and Windows Firewall.

Computer has been running Windows auto Update fine for several years.

Recently 2 (and only 2) updates have consistently been failing: KB2839229 and KB2836502. All other updates continue to auto update fine.

Here are my troubleshooting steps (I tested Update after every step): re-ran Update several times, ran MS Fix-It for Update (said problems were fixed), Ran a disk check (no errors found), ran a full virus scan with Security Essentials (nothing found), Ran Malwarebytes full scan (Trojan found: HMO, cleaned), re-ran Malwarebytes full scan (clean), re-ran MS Fix-It for Update (again said problems were fixed), Downloaded and installed both updates manually (both failed), ran System Update Readiness Tool (said problems fixed), ran Windows Update Diagnostics, got errors (see jpg)...

I have included CBS logs if that helps.

Thanks in advance! Any help would be most appreciated on my next steps...

Hi Scott,

Based on one of those screencapture images, please try the following:

1. Click Start
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report the output from the command window once it finishes.

In addition to Colin's suggestion, can you do this please? It will fix your 0x800B0100.


Windows Update Package Replacement


Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)


    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests



  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)


    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages



  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:


    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log


You will probably be shown the error code 0x8024200D after performing this fix, if so, please download and install the update from this link. It must be downloaded using Internet Explorer.

All fixed guys! I was able to manually download the two updates and they installed perfectly.
