Windows updates not taking, reverting, constantly retrying!!!

    Hi Everyone,

My Windows 7 (x64) computer is stuck trying to install updates. Each time I shut down my computer the updates are automatically run, and I see the following...

    then...

    then...

At this point the computer shuts down. I then turn the computer back on and see the following...

    then...

At this stage the computer reboots and then I see the following...

I see the regular logon prompt...

I can then logon as normal, use the computer as normal, but once I shut down the process described above repeats. I have seen it repeat on at least four occasions.

Finally once I log back on I am not prompted with any options, the updates automatically re-apply, and if I look under "Windows Updates" in "Control Panel" I see the following -

If anybody knows how to stop this from happening / fix this please let me know.

    Kind Regards,

    Davo

Thanks NoelDP, extra information as requested...

    Hi NoelDP,

Thanks for the heads up on the correct Windows Update post method. I have followed the instructions on the link that you kindly provided.

1). I installed the Windows 7 x64 System Readiness Tool
    2). I ran sfc /scannow

3). Windows update error codes are not presented. Instead the computer just alerts that updates need to be installed, attempts to install them, rolls them back, and then reboots (as explained in my original post).

4). Please see the DropBox link below for the log zip file -

    CBS.zip File

I hope that this information helps with finding a solution.

    Kind Regards,

    David

The CheckSUR log and SFC log are both clear - there are some minor background errors in the CBS.log file, which I think can be ignored.

The latest CBSPersist file has the following error....

I suspect that the problem may be susceptible to the following solution....

please start an Elevated Command Prompt and copy and paste in the following:

    fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%\
    attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
    del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
    attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*
    del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*
    del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf
    del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

and press enter after the final line if necessary.

If you are asked if you are sure, type Y and press enter.

You may get some errors on some of these lines. Please just ignore them (they are normal).
Then reboot, and do a manual Check For Updates - attempt installation of only the oldest found update, and post the new results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Getting stuck on instructions, can you please provide further help?

    Hi NoelPD,

Thank you very much for your continued assistance with this.

I began following the instructions that you provided, and when I got to the following line -

    Code:
    del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
I was met with the screen below, which explains that I do not have the required permissions to perform the given task.

How can I go about giving access so that this command can complete?

    Kind Regards,

    Davo

Ah - try booting to Safe Mode, and running that command there.

    Hi NoelDP,

I tried this in Safe Mode as well, however the outcome was the same.

I'd forgotten that with this set of commands, some will tend to fail - but only if the underlying system is functional - so go back to Windows update and run a new Check for Updates - what happens?
