    Error 800705AA

Windows Update shows 49 updates failing. I'm getting Error code 800705AA. Windows tells me to install new Windows Update software, but the error prevents my doing so.

The internal Windows Update troubleshooter didn't work. Neither did MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.27299927901950560.1.1.Run.exe.

I also tried downloading and installing the updates with Microsoft Security Essentials turned off, but that didn't work--same error message.

I tried Safe Mode, but I could not bring up Windows Update in Safe Mode.

I tried manually installing the update for Windows Update, but that installation fails, reporting the 800705AA error.

I also ran full scans with MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit Utility with everything showing OK.

Windows Update works OK on my desktop. This problem occurs with my Windows 7 laptop. Everything else seems to be working OK.

Any ideas what's wrong with Windows Update and how to fix it?

Noel: Thank you for directing me to the posting instructions. Attached is a new screenshot of the error code, but I get a 500 internal server error warning when I try to upload the CBS.zip file. It's a little of 10 Meg. What should I do? Thank you for helping with this!

Delete the oldest of the CBSPersist.....cab files and try again - it needs to be less than 8MB

OK, Noel. Here is the CBS.zip file. The error screen shot appears in post #3.

    Thanks.

I can see no evidence of an SFC having been run, or of the CheckSUR tool having run.

Having said that, it looks to me as if the problem is with the Update Agent-

Unfortunately, the easiest cure for such errors is often to do a repair install, rather than attempt a manual repair.

Did you actually run either SFC or CheckSUR?

Thank you, Noel. I ran chkdsk and found no errors. I ran CheckSUR--I've attached the two log files it produced. Thanks again.

OUCH! The corruption is more widespread than I thought

    Code:
    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 529
     Found 4386 errors

CBS Registry Error Total count: 1014
CBS Watchlist Package Missing Total count: 3358
CBS Watchlist Component Missing Total count: 12
The only cure for this is I suspect going to be a repair install - if it works.

The problem appears to be that the registry subkeys are either missing, or don't have the proper permissions.

Please run the following commands, and post the resulting npreg.txt file that should appear on your desktop.

    REG QUERY "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages" >>%userprofile%\desktop\nrpreg.txt
    REG QUERY "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect" >>%userprofile%\desktop\nrpreg.txt

"Ouch" is not good in dentists' offices and in computers.

    Requested files are attached.

    Thank you, Noel.

There are about 4 or 5 patches responsible for all the problems - the earliest, so far as I can see, is from January this year.

I really do think your best option is a repair install
