    Software activation key

    Hello everyone,
I got a message on my computer saying that my windows 7 software was non-geniune. I checked online to see if there was anything that could help me. I realised that I had to insert a 25 digit code activate my computers software. I checked on the back of my laptop to find the 25 digit code however one set was smudged and I can not see it anymore. I am really unsure of what to do. Please help me.

    Thankyou.

If there is no way to see the key on the back of your laptop, the only things you can do are:
    1) contact the support of the manufacturer of your computer and describe the problem - see if they can help you

    or

    2) buy a new key for the edition of Windows installed on your computer.

Hello and welcome pearlzinster if this is the original OS then the activation code can be got via Speccy http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

This a shot of my 8 but the same goes for 7 and is what the motherboard activation was originally loaded with. However if you have installed from a disk / DVD that you have bought then you will need the activation code from it.

Now if you have been remiss enough to get one from Ebay for example then you are most likely to have an old company OS disk or a counterfeit copy.

Can you let us know where you got the machine from - original or used? If it is original then you can do a factory default by power up and pressing the correct default key for Dell which I think is the DEL key.

If it is a DELL machine and it did come with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit preinstalled, then you should take up the matter with DELL Technical Support.

You may also post your query in the Windows Update and Activation subforum with MGADiag report as in Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions and I am sure NoelDP will help you resolve the issue.

Now, sure, you can run Speccy or any other Windows Key-finder program to ascertain the current product key in the installation. (ICit2lol may please note :))

If it is DELL installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit the key will be 342DG-6YJR8-X92GV-V7DCV-P4K27 ( This is no secret. It is the generic key used by DELL to offline activate all their machines with Windows 7 Ultimate.) This is not the same Unique COA key on the sticker and DELL won't be able to tell you which key they had assigned to your machine.

If you restore your DELL machine with the recovery partition/recovery disks you had created/ DELL OEM reinstall Disk ( which DELL has been sending for free on request) this OEM activation key alongwith the embedded MS Certificate will be used to preserve OEM offline activation.Since your COA key is unreadable, this is your only option.

Note: Don't worry. If it is a genuine OEM installation, NoelDP's magic should work to resolve the issue (except in the rare event of the SLIC table in the BIOS gotten corrupt. The COA key is meant to be used under these circumstances.). Once resolved make it a point to back up your system with one of the free imaging software. My recommendation will be AOMEI backupper. http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Thanks J I didn't know they had a dedicated key:) I was just slightly curious as to if the machine was originally the OP's or a used one as it sounds as if it has had a fair bit of wear.
