    That makes more sense :)
what we're left with now is two files from Visual C++ 2008 and one from Windows VPC.

    I've uploaded a file - d0cae.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

...and you know the rest by now :)

That should fix the VPC problem, and just leave the VC pair to do when I can find them.
Once you have the replacement done, co a Check for Updates and see what's found - install only the oldest update found, then reboot and repeat (if it works!)

Ok, xcopied d0cae and CBS.log attached.
Checked for updates but only IE10 upgrade and Bing Desktop (which I don't want) appear. I didn't install these.
    Thx.

Good the only files adrift now are the two VC ones - which hopefully won't affect anything.

Please attempt installation of IE10 - if it fails, please post the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file

Fantastic, it worked. Noel - you are a magician. Many thanks.
Are there any "clean up" tasks to be done now?
    Thx.

    Great!
All you need to do now is delete all the d0cax files and folders, and job done :)

    Good luck!

You START by posting to a NEW thread of your own, and describing your OWN problems - generally no two people will have the same problem or solution.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)
