    New Optional Update from Microsoft

Does anybody have any idea why Microsoft would offer the Bing Bar as an optional update, I installed it, but thought it was kind of weird for them to be offering it to us through Windows Update, as when I tried it I did it manual from the internet

    Hello Techtitan,

If you already had the Bing Bar toolbar installed, then it would see updates for it in Windows Updates if you had the "Give me updates for other Microsoft products....." setting checked.

    OR

If you had the Show me detailed notifications when new Microsoft software is available setting checked.

    Updates: frequently asked questions

Software notifications will periodically let you know about new programs that can enhance your experiences with your computer and the Internet. You can choose to receive detailed notification messages letting you know when a new program is available for download and installation. When you get a notification, you can review what's being offered, and get more details. You can install the programs if you like what you see. The notification will appear for a limited time, and you can close it if you're not interested.
    Hope this helps. :)

I still get an occasional optional update to install the Bing Toolbar even though I don't have it installed and have previously hidden it. Bing is another one of M$'s failures so they try to push it on us every chance they get. It only takes a few seconds to hide the update when it does show up so I don't lose sleep over it.
