    Windows Update stopped working

    80070002 error code.

There is a good workaround described in troubleshooting that error code, but it does not solve the problem.

There is also a good page at Microsoft with instructions on working around the problems, but those instructions do not solve the problem.

I searched here and found no references to "windows update" or "update." That surprised me; maybe I should have tried advanced search.

Anyway, I'm wondering if any others with W7 build 7000 have encountered this issue and if so if they've resolved it.

    Hello Spider...

Have you tried this fix? It's not for the exact error code, but it might help if you haven't.

    1. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator
    2. Type reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f and press enter.
    3. Try Windows Update again, without restarting. If it is the fix, it will work.

    Thank you for that.

    "The operation completed successfully."

But WU still yielded the same error code when I attempted to use it.

Hmm... you haven't used any activation hacks or watermark removal hacks, have you?

Watermark removal. Guilty. Does that bork WU?

That's the first thing it does!

See if you have an uninstaller for that...
Watermark isn't that bad, you get used to it after a day...

I have had W7 since 7000 was released, but you're right, I was just being "asthetically challenged" when I googled for a watermark removal.

I'll look for the uninstall gizzy and post back in a bit.

Thank you very much for your input.

Sorry about all the posts (last one).

Here is the do and undo:

"When running, the script will install a patched version of user32.dll.mui after making the backup of original user32.dll.mui to user32.dll.mui in %systemdrive%\User32Backup\ folder and user32.dll.mui.bak in %windir%\System32\en-US\ foder. So, to uninstall the patch and reset or restore the watermark, just copy or rename back the file to original location or name."
