"Windows 7 Build 7601 / This copy of Windows is not genuine" on Lenovo

    Hi !

After working on my new 64 bit Lenovo L530 for a good 3 months, I get this unusual message that my copy of the Windows 7 Professional OS is not genuine.

    The story so far -
    1. Bought the machine directly from Lenovo through their online store
    2. Selected option to get Lenovo to downgrade the original OS from Windows 8 to Windows 7 Professional for a fee
    3. Created Windows 7 recovery discs from partition
    4. No Windows 8 recovery disc on L530
    5. No Microsoft CoA / hologram
    6. Installed McAfee Internet Security
    7. Up-to-date on all updates / fixes

On calling Lenovo support, I was told that since this is a Windows 8 motherboard with a Windows 7 OS, I was get a copy of Windows 8 recovery CD from Lenovorecovery.com, install Windows 8, activate Windows 8, re-install Windows 7 from the recovery CDs and then re-activate Windows 7.

A Windows 8 recovery CD from lenovorecovery.com costs money. Is there no way to re-activate Windows 7 without going through the above exercise ? Will the above work ? Are there any alternate, less painful solutions ? Help !

I have already backed up my data onto an external drive.

You need to activate the installation with the Windows 7 COA - you should have got one with the Windows 7 Upgrade?

    Hi !

No, I did not get a Windows 7 CoA as it is not an upgrade. It is a downgrade from a Windows 8 OEM.

I've asked Noel, or resident expert, to have a look at this too.

To achieve a downgrade, the original machine must have been supplied with Windows 8 Pro - and you MUST use the manufacturer's recovery media for Windows 7.

You installation looks to have been done using retail media.

    @Noel,

Are you basing your comment on the "R" of the following ?

    Name: Windows(R) 7, Professional edition
    Description: Windows Operating System - Windows(R) 7, OEM_SLP channel
    What do I do ?

    Cheers.

No - on the error message
    Notification Reason: 0xC004F063

which means that the system couldn't find the appropriate licenses.

You must use the proper recovery disks for these license to be present.

    Hi !

The only recovery media was on a partition on the hard disk, from which I created 4 DVDs. There was no other discs present.

And, the recovery was only for Windows 7 Professional.

Did you follow the Lenovo guidelines? - they require that you activate the Windows 8 installation first, and only then install Windows7 (I believe this 'sets' the SLIC table properly).
You should contact Lenovo for assistance, as the indication is that it's their problem.
