Windows Updates Repeatedly Failing on Multiple Computers

Hello All,

I work at a company with over 350 workstations and we are currently having some issues with Windows Updates on many of our computers. They all show that there are 3-4 updates important updates to install, but all of them end in a failure. I have tried many different things to fix the situation. Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder and trying the updates again has no affect.

However, I did find (after disabling the Windows Update service, deleting the WindowsUpdate.log file, and re-enabling the service) that the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log shows the following:
2013-10-07 16:04:31:188 492 1594 Misc =========== Logging initialized (build: 7.6.7600.256, tz: -0400) ===========

2013-10-07 16:04:31:203 492 1594 DnldMgr WARNING: Failed to delete old install directory at C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install. This may block future installs.
After reading the last line, I looked at the Install folder and found that I do not even have rights to open it. I tried taking ownership of the folder, but I don't have sufficient access to do so. I also tried deleting it, taking ownership of the parent SoftwareDistribution folder, and then reinstalling the updates, but that didn't solve anything either.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Thanks Noel for your response. I will follow the instructions on that thread. However, the screen shot in step 3 seems to be broken and won't load. Do you know what location that is referring to where I can find the error codes?

Thanks.

Never mind. I was able to get the image to come up.

Thanks again Noel.

I tried those steps that you sent and the SURT seemed to take care of things on the first computer I tried it on, but it wouldn't even install on the second computer. It kept failing without giving an error code. However, I was able to discover that if I remove the computer from our domain, I could install all available patches. I have no idea what is causing that to happen, but since the issue seems to be internal to our network I am going ahead and marking this thread as solved.

That sounds as if there's a firewall setting being passed down in GP somewhere?
