Hey - a result, of sorts!
well done!

You're lucky your friend didn't know enough to do the reformat/reinstall 'properly' and delete the recovery partition at the same time - or knew enough to avoid doing so

Good luck with the new install - don't forget to update the AV, and install all the Windows Updates.

About 2 months ago, my laptop (Samsung NP-P530) was infected with malware. We formatted the hard drive and re-installed windows. I had a copy of all my licence keys and had previously backed-up all my files. After about a month, i started receiving notifications that my copy of windows was not genuine, even though I am using the same product key that was on the laptop before the rebuild.
  • I have not changed any hardware
  • I have checked the BIOS version is the same as that on Samsungs website
  • I can't read the sticker on the bottom of the machine, as it is too worn
Some people have been able to "recover" a human unreadable COA key.
If you're interested in this and willing to spend some time and effort to try getting the key, take a look at this thread.
