Either's fine :) - I'd much rather have too much information than too little!

Unfortunately, it looks as if you may have forgotten to Share the file - or not put it in your Public folder. please do so and post the new link.

oops, sorry. Haven't used SkyDrive before.

Should be in the Public folder now, I hope. https://skydrive.live.com/?mkt=en-GB...52F59FF0%21105

    That worked :)
There's nothing amiss in the SFC scan, and surprisingly little in the remainder of the CBS.log.

How is Windows Update behaving now?
    Does SP 1 install now?

If not, please try running the CheckSUR tool again, and post the CheckSUR logs.

hmm. Well, it still wouldn't manually install and SURT still gave me the same error. However, I rebooted my machine and whilst turning off it decided to install an update. After it rebooted, there was no mention of SP1 on the updater, though a further 69 updates had appeared. I began to install these and it froze on no. 67.. (a recent win7 security update, I did make a note of the specific update but used notepad which I can't check at the minute)

Rebooted the PC yet again, was informed "Installing updates 67 out of 69" during shut down, and then that it had failed to configure updates and was reverting changes and shutting down. Now everytime I boot it up this is the only message I see, don't even get to desktop.

1 step forwards 2 steps back...

EDIT: I can't even boot safe mode it would seem.

    Hmm - not good

Can you boot to the Repair Environment?
(tap F8 during the POST, and select 'Repair My computer' from the list of options

Ok, It appears that it was just being temperamental. I've finally managed to boot in to windows, and rebooted a few times just to make sure it boots consistently.

Checked system info and it would seem that SP1 is installed now

SURT however is still giving the same error or failing to install / hanging (though I'm not sure I even need to run this now anyway?)

The update that just gave me problems (67 -69) was KB2864058 and has installed fine this time around.

Apart from SURT, everything looks good. Going to work my way though these 68 updates 1 by 1 now and hope for the best. I'll wait for them to have all installed before I give the all clear, but fingers crossed. :)

Please post your windowsupdate.log file (c:\Windows\windowsupdate.log) and I'll see if I can see anything relating to CheckSUR in there - also your latest CBS.log file.

Failed to install the first update I tried and went back to the installing update, failed configuring, rebooting situation I mentioned earlier.

seems SFC has found some errors.

CBS (current) and WU.log are both on my SkyDrive https://skydrive.live.com/?mkt=en-GB...52F59FF0%21105

    Interesting....
SFC found errors, but appears to have exited improperly so I had to go back into the logs to gather the data....

CheckSUR ran - but seems to have crashed part way through after finding ~ 300 errors in the registry.

I think I see a repair install in your future

I would recommend trying the repair with the SP1 download - see the instructions here....

Ouch, that's a lot of errors.

The repair install looks a little complicated, I'm not even sure which of the 3 options would be applicable to me. A question too, would it give the same result as another clean install or does it work differently? (though with the same SP1 issue happening twice in a row on clean installs, I doubt a new install would be any different) That said, I have nothing on here, so a new install is no biggy for me.
