    That, and the fact that OEM licenses get no support from MS (retail licenses get 90 days free support from date of first activation - and must normally be activated before support is given)

    Oh well. I've ordered a retail copy and it'll arrive before the trial period expires anyway. Thank you everyone for your help. I've learnt quite a lot from this.

    The good thing that has come from this is I've thrown in some better hardware bits with no fear of 7 wanting activation ASAP because of any further hardware changes beyond the motherboard I replaced. Yay for Core 2 Quad!
