Lots of problems with Windows 7 update......

Hi all, after some time spent trying to find a solution, I admit defeat - I cannot use Windows Update at all. I have followed the steps you advise before posting but alot have failed.
I have tried downloading the SURT and a box appears saying 'Do you want to install the following Windows software update Hotfix for Windows 1CB947821. I accept but then an error comes up saying 'Installer encountered an error 0x0070003 the system cannot find the path specified.
I have then tried the SFC scan but it says 'Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair servic
My windows update error code is 80070003 and I have attached the CBS file

In short, I'm having a nightmare....

    Can anyone help?

Hi, I already have done! I did that before posting and wrote the results in my first post. I'll break it down point by point..

    1. System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)
Under the For Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 header, click on Method 2 to view the instructions relevant for your computer.

System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

Download the appropriate version of the SURT and save the file to your Desktop.
NOTE: It is likely that we will need to run this file multiple times, so make sure you keep it.

Double-click on the file to install it.
Leave it to run uninterrupted. It may appear to freeze or hang, but this is perfectly normal. If it still hasn't finished after a few hours, then notify us in your post.

I have tried downloading the SURT and a box appears saying 'Do you want to install the following Windows software update Hotfix for Windows 1CB947821. I accept but then an error comes up saying 'Installer encountered an error 0x0070003 the system cannot find the path specified.

    2. SFC Scan
Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each
    sfc /scannow
It will notify you when it has completed, you can now close the Command Prompt window

I have then tried the SFC scan but it says 'Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service
    3. Windows Update Error Codes

In your post, you need to specify what error codes/messages you are receiving when an update fails. The screenshot below shows where error codes are displayed:

My windows update error code is 80070003

    4. Log Collection

The steps that we have done have limited automated fixing capabilities, however they are excellent diagnostic tools and generate very informative logs.
    Navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Windows\Logs
Right-click and on the CBS folder and select Copy.
Minimise all open windows and right-click on your Desktop, then select Paste.
Right-click on the CBS folder on your Desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
A file, CBS.zip should appear on your Desktop.

The CBS file is attached to the initial post

    Done! (See above!)

    Thanks

You haven't included the CheckSUR data - or the CBSPersist files - please read the instructions and follow them.

    Hi Noël, thanks for your patience. I must be doing something wrong that I can't work out then. I have followed the instructions;

    4. Log Collection

I added the file to my initial post - I don't know what else I need to do!

Please check the contents of the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder -

open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command...

    DIR C:\Windows\logs\CBS

Post the output to your reply

Here are some instructions to make lifeeasier :)

    1) To open anElevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs,Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run asAdministrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run thecommands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on thehighlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at topleft – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the lastcommand, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy theresults... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit...'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to pasteit into your response.

Very odd - your system doesn't appear to have generated any CBS data since August last year - OR - you have a tool install which deletes .log files on shutdown!

If the latter is the case then that would probably explain a lot of things - do you have such a tool installed?

    If so, what is it?

I'm not sure. I have cc cleaner but that's all and as far as I'm aware it doesn't run on shutdown. Can you name other programs it may be so I can check? Thanks for your help!
