Windows 7: Reinstalled windows, windows update won't run and other issues

OK, what did installing rapid storage actually do because I just got a notification that windows is downloading updates? Also, does it need to be running on startup? I get an icon in the system tray. I am trying to have as few things as possible running on startup.

Mugwhy, whilst we wait for Noel, I don't think he will mind me recommending a minor fix to your errors.

Please try to install this update, then post a new MGADIAG report.

The MGADiag report shows that the problem was as I expected, the glitch cured the IRST drivers.
Having said that, I'm not absolutely convinced that the drivers are the problem

Feel free to uninstall the drivers now, and reboot, and then attempt Windows update again - also post a new MGADiag report.

If the problem rears its ugly head at that point you can reinstall the drivers - you should be able to use the settings options to prevent the Notification are icon loading.

The update failed, what should I do now? It says there are 127 important updates, but doesn't say why the update failed i.e. no error codes.

I haven't uninstalled the drivers yet, the update that started running when the drivers were installed failed.

This could be due to corruption in the SoftwareDistribution folder - the problem with that the conventional cure can lead to problems later on, if not handled properly, and you will lose your Update history (but the updates will still be installed, and viewable in the Installed Updates listing).

Open an Elevated Command Prompt

Run the following commands

NET STOP WUAUSERV

REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD

NET START WUAUSERV

wait 15 minutes, and reboot

then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed

then go back to Windows updates and install the others.

After I posted my last message, I shut down my laptop and didn't notice that there were updates ready to be installed. It just installed some 49 updates successfully, does this change what I should do or not? There are still some 78 pending...

Don't apply the 'fix' - it's obviously not necessary.

Go to Windows Update and get the rest installed, instead

I am going to try the fix as the majority of the updates failed to install.

Just to clarify, how do I tell which update is the oldest - is it the one at the bottom of the list? Seems to me that it is arranging it by name - there isn't a release date column.
