Reinstalled windows, windows update won't run and other issues

My PC was running very slowly, so I backed up everything and restored it to the image stored in the samsung recovery area (this wasn't the first thing I had tried, nothing else seemed to make any difference). Although the laptop is now running fast again and starting up quickly, windows update now won't run. It was saying "windows update service is not running. You may need to restart your computer". Restarting the computer doesn't do anything at all. I checked that the service was running in services and it is (says delayed start).

I also seem to be missing a chunk of my hard drive (was about a tb before and now is about 500gb), but I think this is to do with the fact that I had partitions before. I am going to use easeus partition manager to fix this (unless there is another reason for this). Also, the pc doesn't seem to recognise my external hard drive, which is a pain because it has all my backups on it. There is one "unknown device" that the troubleshooter will not fix (not sure if the troubleshooter is also broken as it says there is nothing wrong with windows update), but I don't know what it is so can't get the drivers for it. Updating the drivers in device manager just comes back with the driver couldn't be installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I downloaded the windows 7 x64 version of SURT and it won't run/install (I am sure this is the right one, I checked in system). It comes up with the following error: "Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000222". I have tried saving the file to my desktop as suggested and also didn't save, but chose the open option instead when asked with the same outcome.

That 222 error code is an unfamiliar one - but I have my suspicions :)

This may simplybe caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

    Installing theIntel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloadingand installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want theiata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post an MGADiag report. (whether it installs or not).....

Please followthis tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Ignore errors produced when clicking on theCopy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup filesfor some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to yourresponse.
