Build 7601 "Windows is not genuine" Message

    Hi

Have this message on the desktop of the PCs in the house and it beginning to irritate me even though it doesn't seem to have an adverse effect (yet). Brief history - PC was purchased in Dec 2009 from a large UK company called Mesh Computers. I bought two others from them at the same time (Xmas presents for the children). Came preloaded with Windows 7 Premium 64bit(with registration key sticker stuck to the top) and has functioned without issue since.

Fitted a new hard drive 2 months ago (no other hardware changes since new), reloaded Windows 7 from supplied disk, of which I have 3. Have taken all the updates. Don't know when the message first appeared as I'm not the main user. When I look at the system settings under Windows Activation there is a link that read 'You must activate windows today. Activate Windows now'. However nothing happens when I click on it. A little lower on the screen by the side of Product Key the 'Change Product Key' link does nothing either.

    Details from the MGADiag Tool:

First stop Google and the have looked at a few related posts on here, but lots of blind alleys. PC has McAfee virus protection as supplied by my ISP and I don't know that anything else is relevant.

    Thanks for any pointers.

You appear to have neglected to activate the license.
If Internet Activation fails, use telephone activation....

    telephone activation (operator calls)

    Click on theStart button

    in the Searchbox, type

    SLUI 4

    and hit the Enterkey

follow theinstructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephoneansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can dealwith you

OK many thanks for the quick response NoelDp - in the scheme of things, that's very straightforward. The fact that I can no longer activate via the PC itself led me to believe that the problem is more complicated than that.

OK thought I'd give it a go today, but not there yet. Nothing happens when I type 'SLUI 4', and Task Manager tells me that Windows Activation Client is not responding.

Hmm - there's no apparent problems in the report...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, pressEnter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive,so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possiblyafter a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

    SFC -System File Checker -Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages -and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created(C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate itdirectly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Publicfolder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messagesencountered.
