Hi motorhomer17, welcome to 7F!

If Davids' tips do not help you, you should create a new thread here in Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 7 Help Forums and follow the posting instructions here: Windows Update Posting Instructions

There is a new SURT tool that is available that once you run it may help solve your problems. After you download and run it try those problem updates again, and if you are still having problems, finish out the remaining steps of the posting instructions.

Before you run it though, it would help if you gathered the Logs as asked for in Step #4,

Attachment 293758

that way we can get a look at what may have been causing a problem before you ran the SURT tool, and then gather the same logs after you ran the SURT tool and we can compare them to see what may still need to be fixed.

Quick update to my previous posting

Thanks for the replies

I've not done the SURT tool stuff yet.

So just to cover off 'doing the updates one at a time'. Regrets it makes no difference, each fails. Also, for completeness, taking the updates straight off the Microsoft site also fails.

On IE11, I've noticed two differences so far: YouTube takes a bit of persuading to get started, but then runs fine; The UK Met Office weather website now seems to work properly with IE - it was never quite happy with IE10 in my experience.

If the SURT tool stuff works (all new to me and not going to get done today), then I'll cover that off on this thread in case it helps others

cheers

These updates have messed up my laptop! I had 8 Important updates and 1 Optional. One of the Important updates was IE11 and was not ticked. I downloaded and installed all the updates except IE11. Then I downloaded and installed the IEll update and BAM. Pop up box with "Failed to connect to a Windows Service - Windows could not connect to the System Event notifiction Service ......" there was more but it faded. Big red X on my network signal - no networks available. Antivirus software with warning pop ups about email not being scanned or protected.

So I did a system restore and all went back to normal. Googled a bit and found some people had similar issues with these updates, so tried installing them again one at a time. The first Important one installed fine - the one for Active killbits (can't go and check the update number as have no internet access now on the laptop!). The second one was an update for IE10 requiring a restart. Restarted - got stuck at 'configure windows' for a long time, then got stuck at 'Welcome' for a long time. Then desktop loaded and same problem as before - the pop up warning box and no networks available. Tried restarting again - long waits at configure windows and welcome again - then black screen for a long time. Did system restore again to remove the IE10 update - but this time the problem didn't go away. Did system restore again to remove both updates - problem still didn't go away. Went to do system restore back to earlier this morning and my restore points weren't there. Have now undone all system restores, got my earlier restore point back and restored to earlier this morning - but it hasn't fixed it - looks like I'm stuck with it now and will have to reinstall.

From what I read after googling, some people have had similar problems with these updates (some can't get past the 'Welcome screen) and others have had the updates installed fine with no problems, so I am wondering if it depends on your hardware. My system was only recently installed, up to date, without only 2 or 3 programs on, so nothing to interfere, but it is older hardware.

I wouldn't advise downloading IE11! And possibly nothing to do with Internet Explorer at all, until there is a fix.

Any advice welcome!

IE11 caused the problem. It was already unticked in the list of Important Updates. So I ticked it and installed it and that's when the problems started.

System restore didn't actually remove all the updates so am now manually removing them and hope that does the trick rahter than complete reinstall.

Well that was very weird. Uninstalled the updates that went on today. Restarted. Still the same problem - the pop up box and no networks available. But - the little jingle sound happened some time after the desktop opened up (ie delayed) and now have a white box in the middle of the screen! Urgh! And just when I was thinking how lovely Windows 7 is. Am writing this on my XP netbook - good old XP.

M$ has been playing musical updates with me (I haven't downloaded and installed any yet). Tuesday, there was one important update. Wednesday, there were 16 important and one optional update.

On Thursday, there were 17 important updates and two optional updates (IE 11 was the one added to the optional updates). I hid IE11.

Friday, there were 16 important updates and one optional update.

Today, there are 16 important updates and no optional updates.

What the heck?

Edit: I just checked my update history and two of the updates downloaded and installed themselves even though I have updates set to just notify me only. Now what the heck is THAT all about!?

You should consider using System Backup Images.
Restore Points are NOT a complete backup of the OS.
A System Backup Image IS a complete backup.
Restore Points can "magically" disappear for many reasons.
Using an Imaging program such as Macrium, you can control how long the image(s) are kept.

How often you create a Backup Image is a personal choice.
How much are you willing to lose if something goes wrong?

On my Primary systems, a monthly image is enough - before patch Tuesday.
On my Test systems I may create several images per month, week, day, ...
That's where I play with stuff and try different things...
I want a quick back out when i screw up...
It's much easier for me to Restore an Image that takes < 30 minutes and gets me back to where I was, without re-installing the OS, all updates, programs, configurations, ...

There are many SF tutorials for Backup and Restore, and many Imaging programs.
Macrium (free) is highly recommended here, so you might look at this and see if you're interested in imaging.
