    That seems to be OK - the only errors found are fairly common, and don't usually give rise to problems.

    Let's see whether anything in the SFC has changed... please run a new SFC /SCANNOW and post the full CBS folder again.

    If it's changed significantly, then it could have been due to those odd errors - or something else entirely, such as malware/virus.

    ... and this time, SFC found nothing
    Please try Windows Update again - what happens now?

    Tried it. Did not work. I have found that there is an old directory (windows.old) maybe XP. could that be causing the problem? If all else fails I will try again by re-installing win 7 ultimate using the upgrade option. If that does not work then I will wipe the disk clean and do a fresh install.

    The Windows.old folder may be the result of a previous upgrade from XP or a clean upgrade install over Win7.

    I have to admit that a repair install may be your best option now

    First I want to thank you for you wonderful assistance. Having exhausted all the options I am going to do a fresh reinstall once I finish my back up.
