IE 11 80070005 Windows Update error

Hi all,

I've been having a really difficult time getting IE 11 to install. I'm trying to install it to a virtual machine to test how well it works on our network but have been getting an 80070005 error from windows update and if I try and download the installer and run it manually I get "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I've tried resetting permissions via the SubinACL program as detailed in these threads:

I've also tried Microsoft's own Fix-it tool for resetting the Windows update components but that actually came back saying it couldn't find any problems, also run sfc /scannow multiple times with no effect. As a last ditch effort I did a fresh install of windows to the VM, spent the whole day updating only to hit the same error when it gets to IE 11. All other updates installed fine and I can install other programs fine as well, it's literally just IE 11 that refuses to install. Currently running the System Update Readiness tool to see if that helps, will update when it's finished.

Any help would be much appreciated.

No dice, still getting the 80070005 error. Attached is the CBS logs.

Thanks for the response, attached is the Windows Update, Application and System logs.

Running another SFC, will update this post with results. Although all previous attempts with using this have not found any errors.

*UPDATE*

SFC came back with "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". I can attach the output text as well if you want but it doesn't have anything in it other than the verification progress and that it couldn't find any errors.

Your updates appear to be set to pull from VM servers, rather than the Windows servers...

So you have WSUS installed and running?

This may well be the problem, if you don't have access permissions to the server.

You appear to also have problems with the VMware Tools - you have a couple of EventID 1000 errors there.
Group Policy is having problems as well...
and Sophos is also having problems.

The NLA Service isn't starting properly - which will lead to all kinds of other problems...

Check your system clock against the server's - it's not being updated properly (again, possibly network permissions)


Overall, I suspect that your problem lies with Group Policy application, and permissions on the domain - I am not an expert on either
I'll see if I can find someone to help out.

From memory, the NLA service was causing problems with other dependent services (don't have time to find the relevant files and look again ATM) and causing them to fail because it wasn't loaded in time.

If you disable WSUS on this machine, it should be able to pull the updates from the WU servers?
