IE 11 80070005 Windows Update error

    Hi all,

I've been having a really difficult time getting IE 11 to install. I'm trying to install it to a virtual machine to test how well it works on our network but have been getting an 80070005 error from windows update and if I try and download the installer and run it manually I get "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I've tried resetting permissions via the SubinACL program as detailed in these threads:

    windows update error 80070005

Windows update Error 0x80070005 - Need a fix? Click here. - Microsoft Community

I've also tried Microsoft's own Fix-it tool for resetting the Windows update components but that actually came back saying it couldn't find any problems, also run sfc /scannow multiple times with no effect. As a last ditch effort I did a fresh install of windows to the VM, spent the whole day updating only to hit the same error when it gets to IE 11. All other updates installed fine and I can install other programs fine as well, it's literally just IE 11 that refuses to install. Currently running the System Update Readiness tool to see if that helps, will update when it's finished.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    *UPDATE*

No dice, still getting the 80070005 error. Attached is the CBS logs.

    Interesting CheckSUR error there....
    Code:
    Seconds executed: 752
     No errors detected
    (w) Unable to get system disk properties 0x0000045D IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY Disk Cache
There is no significant data in the CBS.log

Please [pst the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file, the full results of a SFC /SCANNOW, and the Application and System Events logs.

    Hi Noel,

Thanks for the response, attached is the Windows Update, Application and System logs.

Running another SFC, will update this post with results. Although all previous attempts with using this have not found any errors.

    *UPDATE*

SFC came back with "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". I can attach the output text as well if you want but it doesn't have anything in it other than the verification progress and that it couldn't find any errors.

Your updates appear to be set to pull from VM servers, rather than the Windows servers...

So you have WSUS installed and running?

This may well be the problem, if you don't have access permissions to the server.

You appear to also have problems with the VMware Tools - you have a couple of EventID 1000 errors there.
Group Policy is having problems as well...
and Sophos is also having problems.

The NLA Service isn't starting properly - which will lead to all kinds of other problems...

Check your system clock against the server's - it's not being updated properly (again, possibly network permissions)

Overall, I suspect that your problem lies with Group Policy application, and permissions on the domain - I am not an expert on either
I'll see if I can find someone to help out.

We do indeed have a WSUS server, however the WsusService isn't running as it's a bit of a mess at the moment. We're just pulling updates from the internet until we can get it sorted.

I've re-installed VMware tools but still getting those errors, it seems to work ok though. I'll Google the event description to see if anyone else has deciphered it as it's just gibberish to me.

Our Group Policy is a bit mess as well I'll admit, it's something we've been meaning to sort out but we keep getting projects dumped on us which take precedence. It's not pretty but it works for the time-being.

Just seen those Sophos errors as well but the Enterprise console isn't showing any errors relating to the VM and there haven't been any further events logged but I will be keeping an eye on it.

The NLA service appears to be running and I've filtered the system event logs by the NlaSvc but it doesn't return anything. Do you have the event ID where you saw this?

System clock is the same as the servers.

I noticed in the Sophos Enterprise Console that there were loads of application control events for IE 11 on the VM. As it transpires IE 11 had been put into the denied applications list. Not sure how it got there as we didn't have this problem with IE 10 (perhaps my colleague put in there without telling me).

I've marked this thread as resolved as I've not got IE 11 installed and working the VM but there is clearly something wrong with out network in general.

Thanks for your help NoelDP, I'll see if I can sort out the rest of the issues you spotted.

From memory, the NLA service was causing problems with other dependent services (don't have time to find the relevant files and look again ATM) and causing them to fail because it wasn't loaded in time.

If you disable WSUS on this machine, it should be able to pull the updates from the WU servers?

No worries if you don't have time to look through it again, I'll have another hunt through myself at some point and make another thread if there is something seriously wrong with it.

I can't see a WSUS service on the VM itself but when we go to do windows updates on any PC we just hit the link that says 'Check online for updates from Microsoft Update' and that will then pull down all the latest updates.

I think the following thread may be useful, so far as disabling WSUS goes...

Thanks NoelDP, that'll certainly come in handy :). As mentioned before we're getting around the WSUS server by select the link to search online for updates but I'll certainly look into applying this until we can get our WSUS server working properly again.
