OK - windows is supposed to rebuild the folders

Please check that the KB2904266 isn't actually listed in the Installed updates listing - the error is sometimes an indicator that the update is installed (badly)
If it is listed, please attempt to uninstall it - what happens?

Conventional wisdom at this point is that a repair install is required.

I'm not too keen at being defeated at this stage - but it's up to you...

Here's the instructions for a repair install -

See what you think.

Carrying on trying to fix it could take some time as I peck-and-hunt for errors, with no guarantee of success.

Like I say - it's got to be your choice.

I don't like admitting defeat either.

The Repair Install in Windows 7 is really the easiest yet, and rarely fails badly (although it may not work, it usually backs out gracefully).
It's certainly worth sleeping on the decision- feel free to come back and ask questions, or carry on as we are at present.

Thanks

Similar to others I also struggled to find a resolution.
I ran the Win 7 in-place upgrade/repair and surprise surprise Windows updates is working again.
Now I have well over 100 updates to install post Win 7 SP1.
Thanks for the link at the end for the win 7 upgrade/repair. It worked a treat.
