Fatal Error C0000022 when updating Windows 7

Hi guys

I'm sorry in advance that I can't follow all the steps as per Windows Update Posting Instructions due to my laptop being stuck on the Recovery Manager screen and I can't even operate it in a safe mode.

Just a quick run down to my problem: after Windows 7 updates last week, I couldn't get into my laptop as it was coming up with some error and again, the only screen that was available to me was Recovery Manager. I performed system restore to restore the computer back to the factory settings, thinking it'd resolve the problem. The laptop was running fine for 1 day but then it again installed some updates and I'm back to square 1.

I don't know if it might be related but last week I was having some major troubles with accessing the external hard drive (which I used to back up my data before I did system restore and now I can't access it - I posted it as a separate thread). The external drive wasn't showing on my laptop, so I set a path for it (F) in Disk Management, after which it was visible in My Computer and showed some space on the drive was used but when I click on the drive, the folder is empty... Anyway, after I ran sfc scan a couple of minutes ago to see for problem files, it brought up a message: 'Warning! F Parameter not specified. Running CHLDSK in read-only mode'.

I'm at the end of my tether with it all and just want my laptop to work and being to able to extract the files from the external hard drive.

I'd be ever so grateful if you guys could give some advice on how to resolve the issue. Many thanks in advance.

What is the exact make and model of the machine?

Is the Recovery Manager mode a Dell utility?

This sounds like it may be a hardware fault of some kind - the -022 error I often see associated with hard drive problems.

run CHKDSK /R on the system drive (usually drive C:, but it may be different in Recovery Manager) and see what it has to say - the scan will take a few hours, depending on the size of the partition.

Many thanks for your reply NoelDP

It's HP G61 (Model G61-410SA).

I'll try to run CHKDSK to see what it brings up and get back to you.

Many thanks.

Hi NoelDP

I've run a CHKDSk command and it brought up a message about Parameter F not being specified again... All the other files seem ok. I tried to run CHKDSK/R command but it came up with a message 'Windows can not run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected'...?

Any ideas what I can do next? I'm really desperate to get it to work now, preferably without doing system restore, so I don't lose my software that I had to reload on the laptop last week.

Many thanks

You need to run the command

CHKDSK C: /R

(change the drive letter for the correct one, if not C: )

The /R switch overrides and contains the /F switch - forcing the machine to check for bad sectors.

Do System Restore OPTION TWO.
So go back in time. Does it boot succesfully afterwards? If so....

Install the windows update patches one by one and reboot each time. Which update was the cluprit? You can always do "system restore" to go back in time.

If the problem is a failing disk, System Restore may make the problem worse (although that's also true of a CHKDSK) and stands no chance of working.
