Yes, found the orange card with windows symbol and Product key and......
Oh my! Its all crossed out!!! Seems in January 2012 I had another spot of trouble and Micosoft (still had free help then for Windows 7) and they had me create a brand new Product Key for this which I have listed and used since then..... So would the MAGDiag program show the original key only? Or this new Product Key? hmmmm the plot thickens!

By the way, how did we ever do long downloading in pre-100% connectivity internet days of dial up (where I would get interrupted by phone calls) ? I don't have or see a easy to accomplish method of downloading to a laptop desktop especially if I have no internet??

I had this (no internet situation) a number of years ago on my XP system, and could not use public computers as they refused to let me "download" anything as it might have a virus.. could not go to "Kinkos" etc computer places where they had computers for rent as the same prohibition applies..

As for using a "friend's" computer, last time they shied away once they heard I was doing the download to "fix" my computer.. so they did not want to download anything into their computer even from Microsoft...

I also have and use Norton Ghost 15.0 for my backup system (which has its own problems but have not had time to address them to Norton yet)...... If I use the Norton Removal tool to remove that Ghost then all the backups I've done on a 500GB HD will be "corrupted" as well, as using that Norton Removal Tool (I have done this before on other systems) seems to remove everything named Norton..... I checked out the site using iPad again its not allowing me to download so have to figure out a sneaky way to get anything into this laptop.....

Can I run MGADiag first and see what happens before trying to remove Norton if its going to cause me more hours on the phone with Norton people to try and reinstall it all back again (keep forgetting my Norton etc account passwords as I don't keep them in the computer ever!)

While I'm replying to your latest response, what does: paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
    - **in your own thread**, please
mean? Is there a way for me to reply to my own message rather than yours? I only get one button that says post reply in orange here which opens up the editor window ----maybe its a button that iPad 5.0 iOS can't detect???

Sure - the MGADiag should be informative :)

The 'your own thread' bit is there for the benefit of any onlookers - so they don't become thread hijackers :) - you can post it here.

    Fyi btw

    Thanks again....

Working on that---holiday is best time for this to have broken I can devote time to it straight through...

BTW I just noticed you too are a VM user---had lots of problems with that system and finally moved off to OracleVirtualBox for XP, Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion (still stuck on that one!) So might pick your mind at the end or start a new thread if you don't mind....

Got the MGADia program and going to try to transfer it to the Laptop and follow the directions after that...

Trying to follow directions---encountered a few snags

    Hi there again..

Hope I'm not being a nuisance...
I went to the Microsoft site and I'm using Omni Browser as Safari 4 no longer operates on the Internet since the OS is Tiger and its really rejected by most places on the web.....

But when I clicked on your link in the quote here::

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

A new window for OMNI Web tries to open for one-millionth of a second too fast to see anything and it closes and that's that! I've tried again and again ----trying cut and paste and all are the same, something is preventing me from going to that download site, maybe its because like most of Microsoft site it detects I'm using a Apple/Mac and refuses to let us view KB's or Join the Community when I needed help for my disabled PC running various Windows over the years... the curse and benefits of being a "two computer" user, both MAC & PC (actually a bit more complicated with all the others I had at work, but you got the idea).....

Question: Am I copying or clicking on the right link? I bolded it (its not hyperlink) above for you.....

Also... I checked the link out and got the following message: Link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 is not valid.
Microsoft Genuine Advantage forums > Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Windows XP)

Question: is there a spelling or spacing error I did in copying the link?

    Code:
    ------------------------------
    Concerning the SFC scan process:
When I typed it in (hopefully I typed with correct spacing as no way to copy & paste it as no common word processor between the Mac & PC) To create the SFCDetails file, At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

    I got the following response:
    FINDSTR: Cannot open C: \windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Question: What should I try next in that category to get the SFCDetails file for you?

    --------------------------

I've also Downloaded and cross-linked the SURT File from the Mac to PC

Ran it and it said: "Do you want to install the update Hotfix for windows? " Yes/No no way to chekc the KB which is (KB947821) first like I want to..... So I said "yes" and it installed it

Its finished its "job" now what? No button to press, nothing.....

    ----------------
I reread the entry discussion about proper preparation for help with Windows Update : i.e. here:Quote:"Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data"

and it says I could scan with SFC/scannow, but it warns will change themes and other things (whew! I have no idea how many things were altered for my benefit by others remotely or Microsoft technicians over the years.. I know I hate the "Aero" look so someone has the theme set back to Vista for me.. I guess that is one thing I'll lose and have to figure out how they did it and re do that, but how to keep track of all the different things that could have been changed and scan now would revert it all back..

I know I know.. its the risk reward of using computers, have to try things to fix them, but when you fix one area you may undo another..... I spend decades balancing resources of old Win 95/98 so I'm aware of the problems, just thought by now (Windows 7) someone might have figured out a better way to do things!

Thanks again!! Have a good evening/night there...

P.S. I should remember, but I handle too many different OS's..... Of course I have the MGADiag program, some Microsoft etc technician installed it on my Desktop years ago... I got it out and ran it and here is the result..... (I read my new Product Key with the last 3 groups of the Product Key shown and they matched so I 'yyy" ed it out ---so you know I did that not the program)

Interesting that you got the MGADiag executable from an MS Techie - so far as I know, you have to get to 3rd-level support before they've even heard of it, let alone know how to read it :)

The report shows no problems - although the system appears not to have been validated since 3rd August (or is it 8th March? :s)

This would imply that as expected, the non-genuine problem is likely to be a race-condition the most likely cause of which is anti-virus or other security software getting in the way of the Software Protection Service.

SFC will not usually make changes to system options or themes, unless non-compliant hacks have been used to put them in place. It's designed to check for the existence of a given set of files, and that the files are the proper ones. It will then attempt to replace any corrupted files with originals from the winsxs backup system, and repair broken hardlinks. It then flags any files it was unable to find/correct/replace.

Without at least the SFCDetails extract of the CBS.log - but preferably a complete CBS.log encompassing an SFC scan - we really have no idea what system corruption is present.

    More details details sigh

Ah yes.... first comment you made.. therein lies a story....

I got it for the Windows 7 through a long route, but it all began with my XP Computer and Windows Genuine Advantage.... I'm almost the only one in USA/World whose computer (after spending 2 years with Microsoft engineers by phone/mail in Redmond----was being damaged by WGA and told I had to toss a $3000 computer and buy a new one with no other option.. so I got things that were needed to investigate problems then and now....

About the SFC system changes I'm just reading what Windows Seven Forum says I quote:

    LONG QUOTE: "
How to Repair Windows 7 System Files with System File Checker

    Information
The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.

    Tip
If you get the Windows Resource Protection Could Not Start the Repair Service error when trying to run SFC, then make sure that the Windows Modules Installer service is enabled and set to Manual.

    Services - Start or Disable

    Warning
Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state. Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc /scannow."

I have no idea what I "did" as never knew I'd be doing something that would revert things back.. Of course I have backups but the idea of replacing almost 400 GB in a HD with 400 GB just to fix my windows "themes" or other small items that were tweaked over the past four years sounds crazy to me.... and if SFC does "fix" something.... all I get by reverting back to whatever I had (i.e. Vista theme etc), is the same problem of no Internet I'm faced with now.. so seriously considering not doing that...

Sorry to be all against your suggestions but I tend to be the one who reads the fine print before I try anything ... that's why my updates take so long I wait and read the screenshots I make before taking the leap of faith and installing anything new... Seems no one else mentioned this (but one or two in Seven Forum have noticed no internet but reading their stuff, its older reasons not something that occurred between November 13 and today....

Finally, I repeat my question.... as I did decide to try the SFC Scan even knowing I might lose a lot of settings... but
    but...

You read my last post.. so here it is again--the Question:

QUOTE: "When I typed it in (hopefully I typed with correct spacing as no way to copy & paste it as no common word processor between the Mac & PC) To create the SFCDetails file, At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

    I got the following response:
    FINDSTR: Cannot open C: \windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Question: What should I try next in that category to get the SFCDetails file for you?
    "

So what should I do now to get you that all important CBS.log file? I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks again for reading all my musings about the problems!....

P.S. I've always wondered.. and my last Latin class was in High School (here in the US most schools don't generally give classical teachings like other countries give, so can I ask what your words:

Noel Paton - Nil Carborundum Illegitemi mean???

Ah - sorry, I missed that.

Usually, it's not a problem but it may be that the file is locked for access somehow (it usually is, but generally there's still access for that command).

Try copying the CBS.log file to the desktop -if/when it eventually works then run the following command...

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %userprofile%\Desktop\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

If you can't do it in Normal Mode, try Safe Mode.

    puzzlement

A search of my computer produced: "No items match your search" I entered CBS.log in search box... where is it hiding that my search feature can't find it.. I know I've removed the "blue" protection long ago for "viewing these files on C drive may harm your computer" or some type of warning they only give you once when you have a new computer/windows.. Hope you remember what that was..
Anyway.... my C drive is open and accessible/ including hidden files, so how to find the file now?

The CBS.log file should be in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder (along with a few other log files, and the CBSPersist archive files)

No Emoticon on this Forum for "head scratching".....

Here is my screenshot of what is currently in the C: \Windows\Logs\CBS folder:

What application/ PC/Mac opens up those CBS Persist files to view? Is it worthwhile looking in them? Which ones or all? do you want to view?

Ok I figured it out... extracted to notepad and copied over to a word processor to count how big a file it is ... would you believe.... 9,850 pages if I printed it out!!!!
That's just one of the 5 CBS Persist files (mostly dated 12-11-13 for some reason....maybe I was uber busy with computer work that day).. :)
