Windows 7: Several windows update error codes

Several windows update error codes

I've had an ongoing windows update issue that has finally irritated me enough to try to resolve it. I'm unable to install IE 10 or 11. They both download and attempt to install but upon reboot to finalize the update, windows gets anywhere between 30-99 percent done and starts a never ending rebooting cycle. Windows update log shows all my attempts at installing either IE as "successful" so I have no codes, but I assure you it isn't successful. Also, I've tried downloaded and installing them manually to the same result.

I also have similar issues with other updates but they show as "failed" and actually give me codes. They are as follows.
Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)
Error details: Code 800F0826

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2868626)
Error details: Code 80073AA2

Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems (KB973688)
Error details: Code 643

I've run SFC with the /scannow command which found no problems. I've run the System Update Readiness Tool to completion but didn't seem to resolve anything. I've also run the windows update diagnostic tool which ends with this result.

I can't compress my cbs folder under 14.5MB so I can't upload my folder (12MB limitation). I've posted a screenshot of my folder in hopes I have unnecessary files I can delete in order to reach the 12MB mark. Name: CBS.jpg

Size: 56.3 KB

I hope I've covered everything. I apologize for the lengthy post and the plethora of problems but I'm trying to help you help me. :-)

P.S. I'd also like to note that I attempted to install these updates in safe mode and clean boot mode with no improvement.

Please delete the older CBSPersist files - from the zipped file, rather than the store.
They should the fit

Thank you for your reply and here you go. I figured several files needed to be deleted, just didn't know which ones.

There's no significant errors in either CheckSUR, SFC, or CBS.log data.

Please upload the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file, and we'll see if there's anything there that tells us what's going on.

They're all difficult - until you know the answer

I think the thing to do first is to kill the whole folder and start from scratch -

Open an Elevated Command Prompt
Run the following commands

NET STOP WUAUSERV
REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
NET START WUAUSERV

wait 15 minutes, and reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed
then go back to Windows updates and install the others.

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I followed all instructions and installed the oldest found update only and rebooted. The update successfully installed, I rebooted and attempted additional updates. The below image displays the two failures throwing the same 80073AA2 error code. Also, IE 11 is showing as successful but that failed as well.

From what little I can find that actually worked for this error message, it appears to be related to problems with the Event Reporting system.

It may also be related to residuals left behind after uninstalling Anti-Virus programs.
What AV is currently installed?
What other AV's have EVER been installed on this machine?

Please run the following command -

REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT /S >%userprofile%\desktop\npexp.txt

This will create a new file on your desktop 'npexp.txt'.
Please upload that to your reply.

For antivirus programs I run Avast and Spybot. Neither are allowed to run real time, I update and scan manually. That being said, Avast does still have two "processes" running. I'm fairly certain I've never installed any other antivirus programs on this rig.
