Windows Update Service is not running, also won't start

    Evening,

I have been dealing with this issue for about a week. I had Windows Update set to notify me when updates are available so I can choose whether or not to install them. The window takes quite a while to open, and when it does it has the red shield with white "X" in it, and says "Check for updates for your computer". When I click the "Check for updates" button an error window popped up that says:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

In the task manager services tab, it shows the Update service has stopped. I have attempted a few ways to start the service, such as in the services window and in the command prompt; the only results have been either nothing or a system error 87, a parameter is incorrect.

    Hi,

In order to better understand the issue, please follow this tutorial: Windows Update Posting Instructions

I downloaded the SURT, but when I went to install it, I was given an error message that read as follows:

    "Installer encountered an error: 0x80080005
    Server execution failed"

The SFC scan revealed nothing as well, and when I tried to attach the CBS.zip file I was given a 500-Internal server error.

The 500 error simply means the file was too big - delete the older CBSPersist fils until the compressed file is less than 8MB and it should work.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.
