update error 80070002 unable to fix

Thanks in advance for your assistance on this.

Updates had not been running for a while so I decided to start figuring out why when I could not install Quickbooks.

Went thru all posts everywhere to try to fix the issue to no avail.

Always end up with update failure 0x80070002, and then if I go to shutdown it attempts to install 3 updates which end up failing every time.

    1) Just ran SURT which appears to have unsuccessfully installed an update, because i ran it again and it did the same exact install which leads me to believe it didnt work last time.

    2) Tried to run SFC every which way to Sunday, online, offline, with options, without, from two different Win 7 Pro Sp1 DVD's, always ends up failing saying reboot or system repair pending.

    3) Only get error code 0X80070002

    4) attached cbs log

Please let me know if there is any way to avoid a repair install or clean install

I'll post a fix when I can - but it probably won't be until Saturday afternoon.
Shout if you haven't heard by then!

    Noel,

Any time to look into this issue?

    Ooops! - sorry!

    I've uploaded a file - md5aa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
    Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder md5aa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be one folder inside it (Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

The CheckSUR report shows that it fixed the files it was supposed to - now we have to get the rest of the broken files.
Please attempt another SFC scan, then post the CBS.log file, and the latest CBSPersist file - you'll have to copy the CBS.log to the desktop first before zipping it for upload.

I can see why the SFC is failing now - there are some nasty errors in your registry.

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or SkyDrive) and post a link.
