Windows is not genuine - Build 7601

I recently started having problems with my copy of Windows 7 saying it's not genuine. It came already installed on my laptop so I don't have the disk but I have tried re-entering the key on the back of my laptop with no luck. So here I am, maybe someone here has more knowledge on this and tell me how to fix this.

    Your installation is counterfeit.
Your machine was built in 2008 - well before Windows 7 was launched - and cannot possibly support a OEM_SLP License for Windows 7
You need to reformat and reinstall using legitimate media and Key.

Have you sent the machine in for repair? - who to?
was this a new machine when you purchased it?

For which version and edition of Windows is the machine licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case??

    That explains why that's happening.

I got the laptop from my step dad because my desktop broke and I needed a backup while I wait for my tax return to build a new PC. He does apartment maintenance and he said one of the tenants gave him the laptop. I suspected that it originally had Vista but I wasn't 100% sure so I came here.

I need to get a Vista disk and reinstall that. Thanks for your help :)

Awesome, thanks! That does help because I didn't have the disk but the sticker with the key is still on the back of the laptop so this should solve everything. Thanks for the help.
