    Windows 7 Build 7601 message

    Hi all,

I've had my computer up and running for a long time with no issues. This morning I turn the laptop on and in the lower lefthand message, the Windows 7 Build 7601, This copy of Windows is not genuine has appeared. I had this message on an older laptop a few years back and I think I had to replace a vss file and that fixed it, but I can't remember for sure. I do not have a COA on my laptop. Our company purchases from Lenovo and asks them to downgrade from Win8 to Windows 7. My laptop shipped with Windows 7 Pro 64bit but has a Win8 sticker on it (no COA).

Nothing was done this morning when I booted my machine up. Yesterday, I installed iTunes but didn't open it after the install. I believe there might have been a SEP update yesterday, but I didn't notice the message until this morning. Here's my MGADiag results:

Is there any way you can copy and post the event viewer logs so we can see exactly what type of errors(if any) that show in there.

Which ones would you want? Under Windows Logs, I have 15,862 System logs. I have a recent that says "
The Windows Activation Technologies Service service entered the running state." & then "
The Windows Activation Technologies Service service entered the stopped state." There's also an error from about an hour ago "
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the DisplayLinkService service." There's also a DNS error from about 2 hours ago "
Name resolution for the name teredo.ipv6.microsoft.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded." Most all of the entries are informational entries.

This error usually indicates that the SLIC information isn't being read correctly. How was this installation originally activated?

Your SLIC table is showing as damaged...
    Code:
    OEM Activation 2.0 Data-->
BIOS valid for OA 2.0: no, invalid SLIC table
    Windows marker version: N/A

The normal solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker - but Win 8 machines downgraded to Win7 don't have COA stickers.

In such circumstances, the only things you can do are

    1) recreate the Licensing Store - in case it's a minor software problem causing the misread
    2) try updating the BIOS to the latest available Win7-compliant one, from the manufacturer's website
    3) Contact the manufacturer direct, and see if they can provide assistance to correct the SLIC table (or the machine)
    4) a reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's recovery media
    5) purchase a new license for Windows (or a new computer)

Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
    net start sppsvc
    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, then the problem still exists, and you'll have to try refreshing the BIOS.

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

Thanks all. I tried recreating the Licensing store and when I went to re-activate it, it told me the Win7 Pro product key is invalid for activation and asked for a new one. I've sent our procurement team an email asking for a Product Key to use. Hopefully they can give me one that will work. I probably won't hear from them until Monday though.

I contacted Lenovo and they told me there's nothing to do except format and then reinstall. They're sending recovery disks because the recovery partition doesn't work.

I'd really like to avoid reinstalling everything, so in the mean time, I'll update the BIOS and the post a new MGAdiag.

Oh, it activated automatically when it shipped and then I formatted and reinstalled everything about 6 months ago and it activated automatically again.

The current BIOS is dated Sept 2013 - which means that it's been installed since then (however old the computer itself is). It's not exactly common, but a BIOS update can cause this type of problem, as well as cure it - see if reverting to an older version works, if there's one available. BUT be very careful about it, as BIOS changes can totally brick a machine!

ETA: Actually, I just remembered Lenovo replaced my motherboard last month because it failed! Maybe Windows just now did a check and that's what did it. I tried an older BIOS from Lenovo's site, and even though it said it was for my system, it wouldn't run (thank goodness it didn't run if it wasn't compatible). I guess I'll wait to hear from procurement on Monday on if they can get me a license key before I reinstall everything.

I'm a little concerned if its because I have a new motherboard and I reinstall everything with the recovery disks that I'll still get the error message the next time the system checks in with Microsoft.

That sounds as if it could be the cause.
If your company has a Volume License, you could use that - providing it's an MAK type.
However, it is definitely Lenovo's problem, rather than a software one, in my opinion.
